「年」の話
THE STORY OF THE YEAR


一月の末ぢかいころで、雪がおそろしく、ふりつゞけてゐました。
IT was near the end of January, and a terrible fall of snow was pelting down,

町の通や小路では、ぴゆう／＼渦をまいてふきとんでゐました。
and whirling through the streets and lanes;

家々の窓がらすの外がはは、まつ白におほひつぶされ、屋根々々からは、つもつた雪が、かたまつて、どゝん／＼と、おちつづけてゐます。
the windows were plastered with snow on the outside, snow fell in masses from the roofs. 

人々は、あわてさわぎ、
Every one seemed in a great hurry;

走つたり飛んだり、おたがひに腕につかまり合つて立ちすくんでゐたりしました。
they ran, they flew, fell into each other's arms, 

つかまつてゐるその一瞬間だけは安全な気がしましたが、はなれゝば吹きたふされさうでした。
holding fast for a moment as long as they could stand safely.

馬車や馬やは、砂糖が氷りついたようになつてゐます。
Coaches and horses looked as if they had been frosted with sugar.

馬丁たちは、風に顔をそむけるために、後向きになつて、馬車の背中へもたれすがつてゐます。
The footmen stood with their backs against the carriages, so as to turn their faces from the wind.

輪だちが雪にくひこんで馬車はのそり／＼としか動かないので、かち歩きの人々は、てん／゛＼にその馬車の、片方のかげにはひつて、ちゞこまつてゐました。
The foot passengers kept within the shelter of the carriages, which could only move slowly on in the deep snow. 

その雪あらしがやつと止みました。
At last the storm abated, 

そこは、町の、或せまい横町で、そこでは、家々のまへだけがきれいに雪かきが出来てゐました。
and a narrow path was swept clean in front of the houses; 

人々はそのわづかな一巾のところを通るのです。


だから、もしだれかと行き合ふと、二人ともおたがひに、だまつて、ぢつとして立つてゐます。
when two persons met in this path they stood still,

だれだつて、じぶんの方から、ゆづつて、ふかい雪の中へよけどくのはいやですから。
for neither liked to take the first step on one side into the deep snow to let the other pass him.

でも、そのうちに二人は、黙つたなり、話をつけ合ひでもしたように、おのおの、片方の足だけを、ぎせいにして、ぐざりと、深い雪の中に突つこんで、からだをかはし合つて、とほりすぎるのでした。
There they stood silent and motionless, till at last, as if by tacit consent, they each sacrificed a leg and buried it in the deep snow.

夕方近くなりますと、すつかり、しづかに晴れ上りました。、
Towards evening, the weather became calm.

空は拭きとつたように雲がきえて、これまでよりは、ずつとたかく、ずつと、すきとほつてゐます。
The sky, cleared from the snow, looked more lofty and transparent,

そのうちに星が光り出しました。
while the stars shone 

その星も、こと／゛＼く真あたらしいように見え、
with new brightness and purity.

或ものは、おどろくばかりのかゞやきと、すが／＼しい、きれいさとをほこつてゐます。


夜どほし、それはきつい冷えかたで、いてついた雪はみし／＼、と、ひゞわれました。
The frozen snow crackled under foot,

これなら、夜があけて、雀たちが上つ皮へおりてとまつても、めりこむ気づかひはなささうでした。
and was quite firm enough to bear the sparrows, who hopped upon it in the morning dawn.

雀たちは朝が来ると、雪かきの出来たところへおりて、そつちこつちと、ぴよん／＼走りあるきました。
They searched for food in the path which had been swept,

でも食べものはちつとも見つからず、からだも寒くて／＼たまりません。
but there was very little for them, and they were terribly cold.

「ちゆつ／＼」
"Tweet, tweet," 

と、一人の雀が、仲間の小さな雀に話しかけました。
said one to another;

──「ね、人間は、年があらたまつたなんて喜んでゐるが、わしたちに言はせれば、こんな年では去年より、ずつとわるい。
they call this a new year, but I think it is worse than the last.

去年をにがさなければよかつた。
We might just as well have kept the old year;

これぢや、まつたくつまらない」
I'm quite unhappy, and I have a right to be so."

といひますと、相手の雀は、


「ほんとだ。
"Yes, you have;

人間たちはそら新年が来ると言つて走りまはり、お祝ひの爆音をぽん／＼上げた。
and yet the people ran about and fired off guns, to usher in the new year,"


said a little shivering sparrow. 


それからぱんや壷を戸口へ投げつこをして、大さわぎをして喜んだ。
"They threw things against the doors, and were quite beside themselves with joy, because the old year had disappeared.

おれも、これでは、今にあたゝかい時候が来るのだなとおもつてにこ／＼した。
wI was glad too, for I expected we should have some warm days,

けれどもそんなものはちつとも来やしない。
but my hopes have come to nothing.

来ないどころか、暮のころよりも、もつと冷えかたがはげしいもの。
It freezes harder than ever;

人間たちは、時をはかりちがへたんだよ」
I think mankind have made a mistake in reckoning time."

と、ふるへながら言ひました。


「間ちがへたんだよ」
"That they have,"

と、年をとつた、頭の白い、べつの雀が言葉をはさみました。──
said a third, an old sparrow with a white poll;

「人間たちは、こよみとかいふものをもつてゐる。
"they have something they call a calendar;

人間が発明したものなのだ。
it's an invention of their own,

人間はすべてのことを、何でもそのこよみによつて、わりふりしてゐる。
and everything must be arranged according to it, 

それがいけないのだよ。
but it won't do.

第一、春が来てからこそ、あたらしい年といふものがはじまるのが、本当ぢやないか。」
When spring comes, then the year begins.
It is the voice of nature, and I reckon by that."

「その春はいつ来るだらう」
"But when will spring come?"

と、みんなは聞きました。
asked the others.

「それは、鴻の鳥がかへれば、来るよ。
"It will come when the stork returns,

だけど、いつわたつて来るか、一向あてにはならない。
but he is very uncertain,

この町の人間にだつて、だれにも、鴻の鳥が来るか来ないか、てんで分らないんぢやないか。
and here in the town no one knows anything about it. 

それにくらべると村の人間は、そんなことはずつと早くかぎ出すよ。
In the country they have more knowledge;

みんなで村へとんでいかうぢやないか。
そして、村でまつてゐよう。
shall we fly away there and wait?

ともかく村にゐた方が、ちつとでも近く春のそばへ行けるのだ。」
we shall be nearer to spring then, certainly."

年よりの雀がかう言ひますと、そのときまで、何にも、はつきり考へを言はないで、永い間、たゞ、ちい／＼なき／＼、ぴよん／＼とびまはつてゐた、ほかの雀たちの中の、一人の女雀が言ひました。──
「さうね、それもいゝかもしれないけれど、
"That may be all very well," 
said another sparrow, who had been hopping about for a long time, chirping, but not saying anything of consequence,

私たちはもつとこゝにゐますわ。
あたしはこの町にゐれば、いろんな、おもしろいことがあるんだから。
"but I have found a few comforts here in town

村へいつてしまへば、それがみんなふいになりさうですもの。
which, I'm afraid, I should miss out in the country.

このじき近くの広場の中に一家族の人が住んでゐます。
Here in this neighborhood, there lives a family of people

その人たちは、ほんとに気のきいた人で、植木鉢を三つ四つ、ちやんと壁の下へおいてくれてゐるのです。
who have been so sensible as to place three or four flower-pots against the wall in the court-yard,

その鉢は、口のところが、中へ向つて、ぐいとへこんで、せまくなつてゐる鉢で、底の方は、外がはへ向つてとがつてゐます。
so that the openings are all turned inward, and the bottom of each points outward.

その鉢に、ちようど私たちが出たりはひつたり出来るだけの穴があいてゐます。
In the latter a hole has been cut large enough for me to fly in and out.

あたしは、うちの人とその中へ巣をつくつて子どもたちをそだてゝゐるのです。
I and my husband have built a nest in one of these pots, and all our young ones, who have now flown away, were brought up there.

その家の人があたしたちを見て楽しまうといふ考へから、わざ／＼さういふ仕かまへをしてくれたのです。
The people who live there of course made the whole arrangement that they might have the pleasure of seeing us,

でなければ、私たちを、目のまへで見ることが出来ませんからね。
or they would not have done it.

それからその人たちは、やはりじぶんたちのなぐさみに、あたしたちへぱんを小さくほぐしては、ふりまいてくれます。
It pleased them also to strew bread-crumbs for us,

ですからあたしたちは食べものに不自由がありません。
and so we have food,

いはゞ、その家の人に養つてもらつてゐるようなものです、
and may consider ourselves provided for.

だから、あたしも、うちの人も当分この町にゐます。
So I think my husband and I will stay where we are;

それあ、こゝだつて、こんなに寒かつたりして、いやなこともあるけれど、でも、こゝは動かないつもりですよ」
although we are not very happy, but we shall stay."

と、長々としやべりました。


「それぢや、おれたちは村へとんでいかう。
"And we will fly into the country," 


said the others,


そして春が、まだ来ないかどうか、見て見よう。
"to see if spring is coming."

ほかの雀たちはかう言つて、そろつて飛んでいきました。
And away they flew.

村へ来て見ると、そこはまだ、きつい／＼冬でした。
In the country it was really winter, a few degrees colder than in the town.

草なぞも町のよりは、ずつと短く、


するどい風が、雪におほはれた野を、よこぎつて吹きまくつてゐます。
The sharp winds blew over the snow-covered fields.

百姓たちは、ぶあつな手袋をはめて馬橇の中にすわり、両手で胸をこすり／＼して、からだをあたゝめてゐます。
The farmer, wrapped in warm clothing, sat in his sleigh, and beat his arms across his chest to keep off the cold.

鞭は膝の上によこたへてゐます。
The whip lay on his lap.

馬は、もう一度、汗の湯気がたつまで走りつゞけます。
The horses ran till they smoked.

馬の蹄と橇のきしりとで、氷つた雪は、みし／＼音をたてゝ、ひゞわれます。
The snow crackled,

さつきの雀たちは、その橇の通つたあとの、くぼみの中を、ぴよん／＼はねとびながら、
the sparrows hopped about in the wheel-ruts,

「ちゆつ／＼、ちゆつ／＼、春はいつ来るんだらう。
ずいぶんのろいね」
と、ふるへ／＼言ひました。
and shivered, crying, 
"Tweet, tweet; 
when will spring come? 
It is very long in coming."


すると、


「のろいね」
"Very long indeed,"

と、野の、はるか向うの、雪にとざされた、つぎの丘の上から、だれかゞ、やはりかう言ひました。
sounded over the field, from the nearest snow-covered hill.

それはこだまかも分りません。
It might have been the echo which people heard,

でなくば、多分、あの、あすこにゐる──この風と寒さとの中で、雪の、かたいかたまりの上に、しよぼんと坐つてゐる──あの、へんな、ふしぎな、おぢいさんが言つたのでせう。
or perhaps the words of that wonderful old man, who sat high on a heap of snow, regardless of wind or weather.

おぢいさんは、百姓のとほりに、粗らしやの、ごは／＼の着物を着て、まつ白に雪をかぶつて坐つてゐます。
He was all in white; 
he had on a peasant's coarse white coat of frieze.

髪もまつ白髪、そしてまつ青な顔をして、青い大きな眼をうるませてゐます。
He had long white hair, a pale face, and large clear blue eyes. 

「あすこにゐるおぢいさんは、だれです」
"Who is that old man?"

と雀たちは、そばの柵にとまつてゐた大烏にききました。
asked the sparrows.


"I know who he is," 
said an old raven, who sat on the fence,


大烏は、たとへ人間でも、神さまのお目から見れば、小さな小鳥と同じで、ちつともいばれたものではない。
and was condescending enough to acknowledge that we are all equal in the sight of Heaven, even as little birds,

だから、じぶんも、雀にだつて話をし、何でも知らしてやるのがあたりまへだといふ、そこの道理がよく分つてゐました。
and therefore he talked with the sparrows, and gave them the information they wanted. 

ですから、すぐに、答へました。
"I know who the old man is," 
he said.

「ふん／＼、あのおぢいさんは冬だよ。
"It is Winter, 

去年の年よりだよ。
the old man of last year;

でも、こよみがいふように、まだ死んぢやあゐない。
he is not dead yet, as the calendar says,

いまに出てお出での、春の王子さまの護衛をするために、あゝしてまつてゐるのだ。
but acts as guardian to little Prince Spring who is coming.

さうだ。
おぢいさんは、まだこの野を支配してゐる。
Winter rules here still. 

おゝ、さむい。
Ugh! the cold makes you shiver,

おまへさんたちも、寒くてふるえてるのだらう。」
little ones, does it not?"


「えゝ、もう。
ぶる／＼ふるえてゐます」
と、一人の小さな雀が言ひました。


そしてその雀は、仲間に向つて言ひました。
「やつぱり、わたしが言つたとほりでせう。
"There! Did I not tell you so?" 
said the smallest of the sparrows.

こよみなんてものは、たゞ人間が勝手に発明したものです。
"The calendar is only an invention of man,

自然をもとにして、あみ出したものぢやない。
and is not arranged according to nature.

人間は、さういふことは、わしたちにまかしておくといゝのだ。
They should leave these things to us;

わしたちの方が人間よりも、生れつき、ずつとかしこく出来てゐるのだからね。」
we are created so much more clever than they are."

そのうちに一週間たち、二週間たちました。
One week passed, and then another.

氷りついた湖水は、かたく、かち／＼になつて、鉛の板をのべしいたように見え、
The forest looked dark, the hard-frozen lake lay like a sheet of lead.

氷りつぽい霧が、陸の上をおほふてゐます。
The mountains had disappeared, for over the land hung damp, icy mists.

まつくろい大烏の群は、長い列をつくつて、しかし、無言のまゝで、とびかひしてゐます。
Large black crows flew about in silence; 

そんな風で、ちよつと見ると、自然は、まだ、すつかり、眠つてゐるように見えてゐます。
it was as if nature slept.

が、太陽の光は、湖水の面を、足音なく歩きわたつてゐます。
At length a sunbeam glided over the lake,

そのために、湖水はみがきをかけた錫のように光つて来ました。
and it shone like burnished silver.

野や丘をおほふてゐる雪も、これまでのように強くちか／＼とは光りません。
But the snow on the fields and the hills did not glitter as before.

しかし、例の、まつ白になつた冬のおぢいさんは、まだあのまゝ、あすこにぢつと坐つて、わきめもふらず、南の方ばかりを一生けんめいに見つめてゐます。
The white form of Winter sat there still, with his un-wandering gaze fixed on the south.

おぢいさんには、大地の雪の絨毯が、言はゞ、だん／＼に地の下へ沈んでいくように見える、それにも気がつかず、
He did not perceive that the snowy carpet seemed to sink as it were into the earth;

又その絨毯には、もう、そちこちに、すこしづつ、小さな、緑色のつぎあてが出来たことも、そして、その青いつぎあての中には雀たちが群がつてゐることにも気づかないのです。
that here and there a little green patch of grass appeared, and that these patches were covered with sparrows.

「ちい、ちゝー、ちい、ちゝー、
"Tee-wit, tee-wit;

春が来るのかい？」
is spring coming at last?"

「春だよ」
Spring!

と、いひ合うこゑが、野や、草地のそこいら中から、そして木の幹に青々したこけが、まだ氷気を帯びて、ちか／＼光つてゐる森中から、ひゞいて来ました。
How the cry resounded over field and meadow, and through the dark-brown woods, where the fresh green moss still gleamed on the trunks of the trees, 

と見ると、南の方から二人の、一ばん早い鴻の鳥が、空をくゞつて飛んで来ました。
and from the south came the two first storks flying through the air, 

二人は、それ／゛＼、その口ばしの上へ、かわいらしい小さな子どもを一人づゝのせてゐます。
and on the back of each sat a lovely little child, 

一人は小さな王子、一人は小さな王女です。
a boy and a girl.

その王子と王女とは、つばさをとめた、鴻の鳥の口ばしから下り立つて、大地に頬ずりをして、言葉をかけました。
They greeted the earth with a kiss, 

二人が歩いてまはるところには、どん／＼白い花が雪の下から、のび出て来ます。
and wherever they placed their feet white flowers sprung up from beneath the snow.

二人は間もなく、手をつなぎ合つて、年をとつた氷のおぢいさんの冬のそばへいきました。
Hand in hand they approached the old ice-man, Winter,

そして二人で、おぢいさんの胸にとりすがつて、おぢいさんを抱きました。
embraced him and clung to his breast;

すると、またゝく間に、二人とおぢいさんと、ぐるりのすべての地面とが、しめつた、うすぐらい重たい、ふかいもやにつゝまれてしまひました。
and as they did so, in a moment all three were enveloped in a thick, damp mist, dark and heavy,

もやは顔かけのように、あたり一めんをおほふてしまひました。
that closed over them like a veil.

そのうちに、だん／＼と風が出て来ました。
The wind arose 

風はやがて、ごうと、うなつて突きすゝんで来て、つよく打ちつけ／＼してもやを追ひのけました。
with mighty rustling tone, and cleared away the mist.

そのために．太陽の光は、あたゝかく、かゞやき出しました。
Then the sun shone out warmly.

と、おもふと、冬はいつのまにか姿を消して、うつくしい春の王子と王女とが、『今年』の玉座の上に坐つてゐました。
Winter had vanished away, and the beautiful children of Spring sat on the throne of the year.

「あゝ、これが春だ。」
"This is really a new year," 


cried all the sparrows,


「さあ、これで、われ／＼は、うけとるものをうけとつた。
"now we shall get our rights,

きびしい冬の、つぐなひがつくのだ。」
and have some return for what we suffered in winter."


雀たちは、てん／゛＼にかう叫びました。


小さな王子と王女とが行くところには、緑の芽が、木々や灌木の上にもえ出します。
Wherever the two children wandered, green buds burst forth on bush and tree, 

草はずん／＼伸び上り、麦の畠は青くなつて、一日々々と美しくなつていきます。
the grass grew higher, and the corn-fields became lovely in delicate green.

王女は、四方八方へ、花をまいて歩きます。
The little maiden strewed flowers in her path.

王女が、かゝへ上げてゐる、そのえぷろんは、いつ見ても花で一ぱいです。
She held her apron before her: 
it was full of flowers;

いくらどん／＼まきちらしても、いつも中には一ぱいたまつてゐるのです。
it was as if they sprung into life there,

まるでえぷろんの中から、ひとりでに花が出て来でもするようです。
for the more she scattered around her, the more flowers did her apron contain.

王女は今度は一生けんめいで、すべての林檎の木や、桃の木の上へ、雪のように一めんに白い花をふりかけました。
Eagerly she showered snowy blossoms over apple and peach-trees,

ですから、それ等の木々は、やつと青い芽が出たか出ないかに、もう、すつかり、美しく飾りつくされてしまひました。
so that they stood in full beauty before even their green leaves had burst from the bud.

王女は手をたゝいて喜びました。
王子も、にこ／＼して手をたゝきました。
Then the boy and the girl clapped their hands,

と、どこからともしらず、いろんな鳥の群がとんで来て、
and troops of birds came flying by, no one knew from whence,

「春が来た、春が来た」
と、ちい／＼、うたひました。
and they all twittered and chirped, singing 
"Spring has come!"

すべてが、うつくしいながめとなりました。
How beautiful everything was!

家々のお婆さんたちは、のそ／＼と戸口をくゞつて日光の中へ出て来ました。
Many an old dame came forth from her door into the sunshine,

そして、さもうれしさうに、そちこちを小歩きして、いたるところの野にかゞやいてゐる黄色い花を見入りました。
and shuffled about with great delight, glancing at the golden flowers which glittered everywhere in the fields,

お婆さんたちが、若かつたときに、いつもながめ／＼したとほりに。
as they used to do in her young days.

お婆さんにも世界はふたゝび、若くなつたのです。
The world grew young again to her,

「おゝ、今日は、何といふめぐまれた日であらう。」
お婆さんたちはかう言ひ／＼しました。
as she said, 
"It is a blessed time out here to-day."

森だけは、まだ、暗緑色の、木の芽の着物を着てゐましたが、
The forest already wore its dress of dark-green buds.

そこには、もう、たちじやかう草が、すが／＼と、香ひたかく、さき出るようになりました。
The thyme blossomed in fresh fragrance.

すみれも、あねもねも、さくら草も、どつさり出て来ました。
Primroses and anemones sprung forth, and violets bloomed in the shade,

草の葉の一つ／＼にも、うるほひと力とがみちてゐます。
while every blade of grass was full of strength and sap.

それこそは、たしかに、うつくしい毛せんで、だれだつて、その上にすわることをこばむことは出来ません。
Who could resist sitting down on such a beautiful carpet?

小さな王子と王女とは、その草の上に坐つて、おたがひに手をとり合つてうたひ、ほゝゑみながら、だん／＼大きな人になつていきます。
and then the young children of Spring seated themselves, holding each other's hands, and sang, and laughed, and grew.

空からは、やはらかい雨が二人の上にふりかゝりました。
A gentle rain fell upon them from the sky,

しかしその雨は二人のよろこびの涙にまざつておちたので、二人とも雨とは気がつきませんでした。
but they did not notice it, for the rain-drops were their own tears of joy.

二人は、やがて年わかい王さまと王妃とになりました。
They kissed each other, and were betrothed;

その瞬間に、木々の芽が、すつかりのびひらけました。
and in the same moment the buds of the trees unfolded,

太陽が上ると、森は真緑に飾りつけられました。
and when the sun rose, the forest was green.

二人は、森の中の、つりさげられた青葉の大海の下を、手をとつて、さまよひ歩きました。
Hand in hand the two wandered beneath the fresh pendant canopy of foliage,

太陽の光は、葉のすき間から、きれいな、いろ／＼の色にかはつて、さしこんで来ます。
while the sun's rays gleamed through the opening of the shade, in changing and varied colors.

その青葉の、うぶ／＼した、純潔さ。
The delicate young leaves filled the air

その、すが／＼しい香ひ。
with refreshing odor.

小川や流れは、緑のびろうどのような蘆の中や、色のついた小石の上に、きよらかに、そして、うれしさうにさゞなみをたてゝゐます。
Merrily rippled the clear brooks and rivulets between the green, velvety rushes, and over the many-colored pebbles beneath.

すべての自然が、
「これですべてが充ち足りた。
これからも、つねに、このとほりだ」
と、語つてゐるように見えます。
All nature spoke of abundance and plenty.

ほとゝぎすは謡ひ、ひばりはよろこびさへづつてゐます。
The cuckoo sang, and the lark carolled,

全くの、うるはしい春です。
for it was now beautiful spring.

たゞ一人、柳だけは、そのつぼみの上に、まだ毛織の手袋をはめてゐます。
The careful willows had, however, covered their blossoms with woolly gloves;

いやが上にも用心ぶかい木で、少しじれつたいくらゐです。
and this carefulness is rather tedious.

それから、いく日、いく週間がたちますと、暑熱が、渦まくようにおそつて来ました。
Days and weeks went by, and the heat increased.

だん／＼に黄色のふかまつて来る麦の中をくゞつて、熱い空気の浪がおしよせて来ます。
Warm air waved the corn as it grew golden in the sun.

森の中の湖の、がらすの鏡の上には、白ざきの睡蓮が、みどりの、葉をひろげました。
The white northern lily spread its large green leaves over the glossy mirror of the woodland lake,

魚たちは、その葉陰に集つて日ざしをさけてゐます。
and the fishes sought the shadows beneath them.

森のこちらがはの陰にも、太陽が、百姓家の壁に、きら／＼さして、さき誇つたばらの花をあたゝめ、水々した黒い実が一めんに熟し下つてゐる桜の木をほてらしてゐます。
In a sheltered part of the wood, the sun shone upon the walls of a farm-house, brightening the blooming roses, and ripening the black juicy berries,  

桜の実は、はげしい日の光で、まるで熱ばんだように、あつくなつてゐます。
which hung on the loaded cherry-trees, with his hot beams.

その森の陰に、うるはしい夏の王妃が坐つてゐます。
Here sat the lovely wife of Summer,

かつて、小さな王女であり、花嫁であつたあの王妃は、今は年恰好の王妃となつてゐます。
the same whom we have seen as a child and a bride;

王妃は、ぢいつと、湧き集まるくろずんだ雲のかたまりを見つめてゐます。
her eyes were fixed on dark gathering clouds,

浪だつような外線をもつたその青黒い重たい雲は、だん／＼につもりかさばつて、いくつもの山のようにたかまつていきます。
which in wavy outlines of black and indigo were piling themselves up like mountains, higher and higher.

その雲は三方から出て来るので、ちようど、化石した海のようにひろがりながら、森に向つて、おそひかゝつて来ます。
They came from every side, always increasing like a rising, rolling sea.

森の中は、あらゆるものゝ声が、魔法でしづめられでもしたように、ばたりと、とまつてしまひました。
Then they swooped towards the forest, where every sound had been silenced as if by magic, 

風の一つ／＼の息もやみ、すべての鳥も、だまりこんでゐます。
every breath hushed, every bird mute.


All nature stood still in grave suspense.


しかし、村の街道や小路々々には、かち歩きの人々や、馬や馬車に乗つて通る人たちが、早く物陰にはひり着かうとして、あせり走つてゐます。
But in the lanes and the highways, passengers on foot or in carriages were hurrying to find a place of shelter.

と、ふいに中空を、太陽が、焔になり、もえたち、あらゆるものを焼きつくさうとして破裂しでもしたように、ぴか／＼つと、するどい光が走りました。
Then came a flash of light, as if the sun had rushed forth from the sky, flaming, burning, all-devouring, and darkness returned amid a rolling crash of thunder.

つゞいてごろ／＼／＼どゝんといふ音と一しよに、あたり一たいがまつくらになつたと思ふはずみに、雨がざゝあと流れるように、落ちて来ました。
The rain poured down in streams,- now there was darkness, then blinding light,

それからは、しばらく目がつぶれるかと思ふばかりの閃光と、くらがりとが入りかはりつゞきました。
- now thrilling silence, then deafening din.

沼のほとりの若い、とび色をして、羽根のようにふは／＼した蘆は、長い浪になつて左右にゆれ動いてゐます。
The young brown reeds on the moor waved to and fro in feathery billows;

森の小枝は浪だつ沼の霧にかくされてしまひました。
the forest boughs were hidden in a watery mist,

でもなほ、くらがりと閃光と、沈黙と轟きとが、たがひちがひにつゞきます。
and still light and darkness followed each other, still came the silence after the roar, 

草や穀物は、たゝきふせられて水びたしになり、もう二度とおき上ることが出来ないように見えてゐます。
while the corn and the blades of grass lay beaten down and swamped, so that it seemed impossible they could ever raise themselves again.

でも間もなく、雨はもう、しづかな滴になつて降りかはりました。
But after a while the rain began to fall gently,

太陽は雲の間から、のぞき出してゐます。
the sun's rays pierced the clouds,

木々の葉の上には、雨のしづくが真珠のように光つてゐます。
and the water-drops glittered like pearls on leaf and stem.

鳥はちい／＼と謡ひ出し、魚は湖の水面から飛び上り／＼してゐます。
The birds sang, the fishes leaped up to the surface of the water,

蚊たちは日光の中で踊つてゐます。
the gnats danced in the sunshine,

このとき、こちらの、海の、塩つぱい浪にひたつた、岩の上に、つよい夏の王さまが、頑丈な手足をほこり、長い髪から水をぽた／＼たらして坐つてゐます。
and yonder, on a rock by the heaving salt sea, sat Summer himself, a strong man with sturdy limbs and long, dripping hair.

つめたい大雨の水浴に元気づいて、あつい太陽の光の中に坐つてゐます。
Strengthened by the cool bath, he sat in the warm sunshine,

自然のすべてが、あたらしく飾りかへられ、あらゆるものが、ゆたかさにあふれ、強健に、うつくしくかゞやいてゐます。
while all around him renewed nature bloomed strong, luxuriant, and beautiful:

夏です。
it was summer,

あつい、愛らしい夏が来たのです。
warm, lovely summer.

しげつた、くろーばあの野原から、空へ流れ上る香気こそ、うれしくなつかしいものです。
Sweet and pleasant was the fragrance wafted from the clover-field, 

その野原の、朽ちこはれた、むかしの教会堂のまはりには、蜜蜂がむらがりとんでゐます。
where the bees swarmed round the ruined tower, 

神壇であつた石のぐるりには、蔓いちごがまきついてゐます。
the bramble twined itself over the old altar,

今雨に洗はれたその石は、日光をあびて光つてゐます。
which, washed by the rain, glittered in the sunshine;

蜜蜂の女王は、部下の群をひきゐて、その石のところへ飛んで来ました。
and thither flew the queen bee with her swarm,

そして蜜蝋と蜂蜜とをつくりにかゝりました。
and prepared wax and honey.

その蜂たちの作業は、たゞ夏の王さまと、すこやかな、その王妃とだけが見てゐました。
But Summer and his bosom-wife saw it with different eyes,

二人のまへにおかれた、さゝげものゝ台の上は、自然がそなへた、あらゆるおくりもので一ぱいでした。
to them the altar-table was covered with the offerings of nature.

夕方には、空は黄金のごとくにかゞやきました。
The evening sky shone like gold,

いかなる大寺院の円屋根でも、こんなにうつくしい輝きは見ません。
no church dome could ever gleam so brightly,

そして、夕方と、赤い朝やけとの間は月夜でした。
and between the golden evening and the blushing morning there was moonlight.

これは夏です。
It was indeed summer.

やがて又いく日かすぎ、いく週間かゞすぎさりました。
And days and weeks passed,

穀物の畠には、刈入れをする人たちの、とぎ光つた鎌が、かゞやき、閃きました。
the bright scythes of the reapers glittered in the corn-fields,

林檎の木の枝々は、赤黄色い実をどつさり荷づまれて、たれこゞみました。
the branches of the apple-trees bent low, heavy with the red and golden fruit.

ぽつぷ草は大きなふさかざりのようになつてたれ下り、なつかしくかほつてゐます。
The hop, hanging in clusters, filled the air with sweet fragrance,

はしばみの茂みには実のあつまりが、大きな、束になつて熟してゐます。
and beneath the hazel-bushes, where the nuts hung in great bunches,

その茂みの下に、王さまと王妃とが──やゝ年をとつた夏と、そのしづかな慰め手の王妃とが坐つてゐます。
rested a man and a woman- Summer and his grave consort.

「何といふ、ものゝゆたかさでせう」
"See," 

と王妃は言ひました。──
she exclaimed, 

「あたりには、一つの恵みがくまなくあふれわたつてゐます。
"what wealth, what blessings surround us.

どちらを見ても目に入る景色は、なごやかで、さも、じぶんの、ほんとの家にゐついてゐるような心持がします。
Everything is home-like and good, 

それだのに、わたしは──さあ、どういふわけだか、私にも分りませんけれど──何だか、こゝでは得られない、平和と休息とにあこがれてゐるような気がしてなりません。
and yet, I know not why, I long for rest and peace;

この気持を何と言ひあらはせばいゝのでせう。
I can scarcely express what I feel.

人々は、また畠をほりたがやしてゐます。
They are already ploughing the fields again;

あるが上にも、もつと／＼とり入れがしたいのですね。
more and more the people wish for gain.

おや、ごらんなさい、鴻の鳥たちが群れかたまつて、あの鋤の、じき後について飛んでゐます。
See, the storks are flocking together, and following the plough at a short distance.

おゝ、とほい南のあの鳥たち。
They are the birds from Egypt,

私たちをのせて大空をかけて来た、あの鳥たち。
who carried us through the air.

あなたもおわすれにはならないでせう。
Do you remember

二人が小さな王子と王女のときにこの北の国へ来ましたときのことを。
how we came as children to this land of the north;

二人は、花と、よろこばしい日光と緑とをもつて来て木々にあたへました。
we brought with us flowers and bright sunshine, and green to the forests,

風はその木にあら／＼しい仕向けをしました。
but the wind has been rough with them,

ですから木たちは、南の国の木のように、黒く、とび色にしげつてゐますが、あちらの木とはちがつて、ちつとも果物をつけてゐませんね。」
and they are now become dark and brown, like the trees of the south, but they do not, like them, bear golden fruit."

「では、あなたは黄金色の果物が見たいといふのか。
"Do you wish to see golden fruit?" 


said the man,


それでは、よろこぶがよい。」
"then rejoice,"

王は片手をさし上げました。
and he lifted his arm.

すると森の木の葉は、たちまちに、赤と黄金色とになり、森林地一たいに、うつくしい色がひろがりました。
The leaves of the forest put on colors of red and gold, and bright tints covered the woodlands.

ばらの茂みは深紅の実をつけてかゞやき、にはとこの枝々は黒い実の、おもたいふさにおされてたれ下りました。
The rose-bushes gleamed with scarlet hips, and the branches of the elder-trees hung down with the weight of the full, dark berries.

どんぐりはうれて、黒ずんだ殻からおちて来ます。
The wild chestnuts fell ripe from their dark, green shells,

それから森の深みには、もう一度、すみれの花がさきみちました。
and in the forests the violets bloomed for the second time.

けれども王妃は、なほ／＼口もきかなくなり、顔もます／＼青ざめて来ました。
But the queen of the year became more and more silent and pale.

「おゝ、つめたい風だこと。
"It blows cold," 


she said,


それに、夜になると、しめつぽい霧が下りる。
"and night brings the damp mist;

私は小さいときの国がこひしい。」
I long for the land of my childhood."


王妃はかう言ひました、


見ると、鴻の鳥はどん／＼飛び去つていきます。
Then she saw the storks fly away

一人のこらず行つてしまひました。
every one,

王妃は両手をひろげて、その鴻の鳥たちに追ひすがらうとしました。
and she stretched out her hands towards them.

それから、鴻の鳥たちの巣を見上げました。
巣はもう空のまゝです。
She looked at the empty nests;

その巣の一つには、茎の長いやぐるまぎくが生えのびてゐます。
in one of them grew a long-stalked corn flower,

ほかの一つには、黄色いからしなの種がこぼれてゐます。
in another the yellow mustard seed,

巣は、まるで、そのからしなを護り、ゐごこちよくするために作られでもしたようです。
as if the nest had been placed there only for its comfort and protection,

例の雀たちは、とび上つて、その巣の中へはひらうとしてゐます。
and the sparrows were flying round them all.

「ちい／＼、主人はどこへいつてしまつたのだらう。
"Tweet, where has the master of the nest gone?" 


cried one,


風がふいてくると、しのぎがつかないと見える。
"I suppose he could not bear it when the wind blew,

そのためにこの土地を立つてしまつたのだらう。
and therefore he has left this country.

愉快な旅行をお祈りする。」
I wish him a pleasant journey."

森中の葉は、なほ／＼黄色くなりました。
The forest leaves became more and more yellow,

そして葉は一まい／＼とおちかさなりました。
leaf after leaf fell,

そのうちに、あらしが、ごう／＼と吹き狂ひはじめました。
and the stormy winds of Autumn howled.

「年」はもうずつとたけたのです。
The year was now far advanced,

「年」の王妃は、おちつもつた黄色い葉に身をよせかけてしづかな目を上げて、かゞやく星を見てゐます。
and upon the fallen, yellow leaves, lay the queen of the year, looking up with mild eyes at a gleaming star,

王はそのそばに立つてゐました。
and her husband stood by her.

風がぴゆうと木の葉の間をふきわたりました。
A gust of wind swept through the foliage,

木の葉は又、にはか雨のように、ふりおちました。
and the leaves fell in a shower.

と、思ふと、王妃の姿はもうかききえてゐました。
The summer queen was gone,

たゞ、一羽の蝶が、──のこつてゐた最後の蝶が、つめたい空気の中を、よろ／＼と飛んでゐるだけです。
but a butterfly, the last of the year, flew through the cold air.

じめ／＼した霧が出て来ました。
Damp fogs came, 

氷をふくんだような風が吹き出しました。
icy winds blew,

そして、長い、くらい、夜が、足早に近づいて来ました。
and the long, dark nights of winter approached.

「年」の王は、ふさ毛が雪のように真白になつて、立つてゐます。
The ruler of the year appeared with hair white as snow,

王はじぶんのその白い髪の毛が雪のように光るといふことには気がつかず、雲の中から雪片がおちてゐるのだとばかり思つてゐました。
but he knew it not; 
he thought snow-flakes falling from the sky covered his head,

間もなく、うすい雪のおほひが、野はら一面にひろがつて来ました。
as they decked the green fields with a thin, white covering of snow.

やがて教会堂の鐘は間近くくりすますをむかへるために鳴りひゞきました。
And then the church bells rang out for Christmas time.

「あの鐘たちは、生れ出でるものゝために鳴るのだ。
"The bells are ringing for the new-born year," 


said the ruler,


間もなく、あらたな王と王妃とが生れ出る。
"soon will a new ruler and his bride be born,

その上は、わしは、わしの王妃のあとを追つて、休息につく。
and. I shall go to rest with my wife

かゞやく星の中へ休みにいくのだ。」
in yonder light-giving star."

王は、さびしくかう言ひました。


あを／＼した、まあたらしい色のもみの木の森の中に、くりすますの天使が立つてゐます。
森には、雪がつもつてゐます。
In the fresh, green fir-wood, where the snow lay all around, stood the angel of Christmas,

天使は、間もなく、じぶんの祝祭を飾る、そのもみの木を聖めました。
and consecrated the young trees that were to adorn his feast.

「おゝ、その木の飾られる部屋に、その緑色の枝の下によろこびあれ」
"May there be joy in the rooms, and under the green boughs,"

と、年の王は祈りをさゝげました。
said the old ruler of the year.

数週間たちますと、王は、すつかり、よぼ／＼に老いはてゝ、雪のように、真つ白くなりました。
In a few weeks he had become a very old man, with hair as white as snow.

「わしの休息のときがいよ／＼来た。
"My resting-time draws near;

若い二人のものが、わしの王冠と笏とをうけとるのだ」
the young pair of the year will soon claim my crown and sceptre."


と王は言ひました。


すると天使は、
「でも、まだ権力はあなたにある。
"But the night is still thine," 
said the angel of Christmas,
"for power, but not for rest.

雪に命じて、年わかい種の上を、あたゝかく、つゝませておくれ。
Let the snow lie warmly upon the tender seed.

あなたがまだ支配をしてゐる間に、ほかのものが、服従をうけるのを、たへこらえることを忘れないでおくれ。
Learn to endure the thought that another is worshipped whilst thou art still lord.

あなたが生きてゐながら忘れられることをなげかないでおくれ。
Learn to endure being forgotten while yet thou livest.

春が出て来れば、あなたは、すぐに休むことが出来る」
The hour of thy freedom will come when Spring appears."


と言ひました。


「春はいつ来るのでせう」
"And when will Spring come?"

と、冬の王は聞きました。
asked Winter.

「鴻の鳥がかへると来ます。」
"It will come when the stork returns."

年とつた冬は、白いふさ毛、まつしろい髯をして、こゞえ、こゞみ、老いほうけながらも、雪あらしのごとくに強く、氷のごとくに固く意地をはつて、丘の上の、ふきよせられた雪の上に坐り、ぢいつと南の方を見つめてゐました。
And with white locks and snowy beard, cold, bent, and hoary, but strong as the wintry storm, and firm as the ice, old Winter sat on the snowdrift-covered hill, looking towards the south, where Winter had sat before, and gazed.

氷はさけ、雪はひゞわれました。
The ice glittered, the snow crackled,

氷すべりをする人たちは、すべ／＼した湖水の上を、そちこちと、かすめるように、飛んでゐます。
the skaters skimmed over the polished surface of the lakes; 

大烏や鳥たちは、白い地上に群れて、くつきりと絵のように目だつてゐます。
ravens and crows formed a pleasing contrast to the white ground,

風は息一つもしません。
and not a breath of wind stirred,

そのしづかな空気の中に、年をとつた冬は、拳をにぎりかためて、がんばつてゐます。
and in the still air old Winter clenched his fists,

岸と岸との間の氷は、何尋といふあつみに氷つてゐます。
and the ice lay fathoms deep between the lands.

すると、又雀たちが町の方から飛んで来ました。
Then came the sparrows again out of the town,

そして、
「あすこにゐる、あのおぢいさんは、だれです」
と聞きました。
and asked, 
"Who is that old man?"

大烏も、ちようど、このまへと同じところにすわつてゐました。
The raven sat there still,

それとも、もとの大烏の子かも分りません。
or it might be his son,

ともかく、もとの大烏と、そつくりそのまゝでした。
which is the same thing,

その大烏が答へました。
and he said to them,-

「あれは冬だ。
"It is Winter,

『去年』のおぢいさんだよ。
the old man of the former year;

でも、こよみが言つてるのとちがつて、まだ死んではゐない。
he is not dead, as the calendar says,

今に来る春の護衛をしてゐるのだ。」
but he is guardian to the spring, which is coming."

「いつ春は来るのでせう。
"When will Spring come?"


asked the sparrows,


春が来れば、わたしたちも、らく／＼とくらせます。
"for we shall have better times then, 

すべてがもつとよくなつて来ます。
and a better rule.

このまゝでは何のねうちもありません。」
The old times are worth nothing."

葉のおちつくした森のそばにゐる冬は、もく／＼と考へ入つてうなづきました。
And in quiet thought old Winter looked at the leafless forest,

森の木々は、しとやかな身恰好をして、枝をたれてゐます。
where the graceful form and bends of each tree and branch could be seen;

冬が眠つてゐる間に、氷つぽい霧が雪のように下りて来ました。
and while Winter slept, icy mists came from the clouds,

冬の王は、その若かつたときのこと、男ざかりでゐたときのことを夢に見ました。
and the ruler dreamt of his youthful days and of his manhood,

夜あけ方になりますと、森中は、きら／＼した白い霜にくるまつてゐました。
and in the morning dawn the whole forest glittered with hoar frost,

冬は、夏を夢みてゐたのでした。
夜があけると、太陽は、その白い霜を、枝々から消しちらしました。
which the sun shook from the branches,
- and this was the summer dream of Winter.

「春はいつ来るのだらう」
"When will Spring come?"

と雀たちが聞きました。
asked the sparrows.

「おゝ春だ」
"Spring!"

と、まだ雪のつもつてゐる、方々の丘から、やまびこのような声がひゞきわたりました。
Again the echo sounded from the hills on which the snow lay. 

太陽は、だん／＼あたゝかくさして来ます。
The sunshine became warmer,

雪はとけました。
the snow melted,

鳥たちは、そろつて、春が来る、春が来る、と、さへづりました。
and the birds twittered,
"Spring is coming!"

すると、空をくゞつて、第一ばんの鴻の鳥が来ました。
And high in the air flew the first stork,

そのあとには第二の鴻の鳥がつづいてゐます。
and the second followed;

おの／＼の背中には、かわいらしい小さな王子と王女とが乗つてゐます。
a lovely child sat on the back of each,

二人はその野へ下りて、大地へ頬ずりをしました。
and they sank down on the open field, kissed the earth,

それから、「年」のおぢいさんにも頬ずりをしました。
and kissed the quiet old man;

おぢいさんは、雲のような霧につゝまれて、かききえてしまひました。
and, as the mist from the mountain top, he vanished away and disappeared.


And the story of the year was finished.


「さあ、これでいゝ。
"This is all very fine, no doubt," 


said the sparrows,


何といふうつくしい景色だらう。
"and it is very beautiful;

だが、これは、こよみにそぐつてはゐない。
but it is not according to the calendar,

だから、さう、きちんとは、いつてゐない。」
therefore, it must be all wrong."


と雀たちは言ひました。
