むかし、まずしい王子さまがおりました。
ONCE upon a time lived a poor prince;

かれは自分の国を持っていました。


その国はとっても小さかったのですが、だれかと結婚しようってくらいには十分な大きさでした。
his kingdom was very small, but it was large enough to enable him to marry, 

そして、その王子さまはある人と結婚したいと思っていたのです。
and marry he would.

それにしても、この王子さまが皇帝さまの娘にむかって
「結婚してくれますか？」
なんて言うのは、ずうずうしすぎることでした。
It was rather bold of him that he went and asked the emperor’s daughter: 
“Will you marry me?”

それでも王子さまはそう言ったのです。
but he ventured to do so,

なんたって、王子さまの名前は、たくさんの人が知っているのです。
for his name was known far and wide,

かれが結婚を申し込めば、「はい」とか「よろこんで」と答えるお姫さまだって、数え切れないほどいるでしょう。
and there were hundreds of princesses who would have gladly accepted him,

じゃあ、そのお姫さまはなんて答えたでしょうか。
but would she do so?

さて、そこからこの物語が始まるわけです。
Now we shall see.  

まず、王子さまのお父さんが眠っているお墓には、一本のバラの木が生えていました。
On the grave of the prince’s father grew a rose-tree,

とってもきれいなバラの木でした。
the most beautiful of its kind.

しかもこのバラは、五年にいちどしか花を咲かせないうえに、咲くときにもたったのひとつしか花を咲かせないバラなのです。
It bloomed only once in five years, and then it had only one single rose upon it, but what a rose! 

けれど、そのいい香りといったら、かぐだけでそれまでの心配事や悲しい思いもすべて忘れてしまうほどでした。
It had such a sweet scent that one instantly forgot all sorrow and grief when one smelt it.

それに、王子さまはナイチンゲールも飼っていました。
He had also a nightingale,

このナイチンゲールは、その小さなのどの中にすばらしいメロディーを住ませているのかと思わせるほどに、すてきに歌うことができるのでした。
which could sing as if every sweet melody was in its throat.

王子さまはこのバラとナイチンゲールをお姫さまにあげることにしました。
This rose and the nightingale he wished to give to the princess; 

そこで、それらを大きな銀色の箱につめこんで、お姫さまへ送りました。
and therefore both were put into big silver cases and sent to her. 

皇帝さまはその箱を大きなホールへ運ばせました。
The emperor ordered them to be carried into the great hall

そこではお姫さまと侍女たちが「お客さまごっこ」をして遊んでいました。
where the princess was just playing “Visitors are coming” with her ladies-in-waiting;

そしてお姫さまはプレゼントの箱を見つけると、手をたたいてよろこびました。
when she saw the large cases with the presents therein, she clapped her hands for joy. 

「まあ、その中身がかわいい子ネコだっらたいいのに！」
“I wish it were a little pussy cat,”

お姫さまはそう言いましたが、
she said.

それはバラの木でした。
とってもきれいなバラの花が見えてきました。
But then the rose-tree with the beautiful rose was unpacked. 

「まあ、なんてきれいに作ったバラなんでしょう！」
“Oh, how nicely it is made,”

侍女たちは口々に言いました。
exclaimed the ladies. 

「きれいだというだけじゃない。
“It is more than nice,” 

なんてすばらしいんだろう！」
皇帝さまが言いました。
said the emperor,
“it is charming.” 

しかしお姫さまはバラにさわると、いまにも泣きそうになりました。
The princess touched it and nearly began to cry. 

「きゃあ、お父さま！」
“For shame, pa,”

お姫さまが叫びました。
she said,

「これ、作りものじゃなくって、本物の花だわ！」
“it is not artificial, it is natural!” 


“For shame, it is natural” 
repeated all her ladies. 


「まあ、怒るまえに、もうひとつの箱の中身を見てみようじゃないか」
“Let us first see what the other case contains before we are angry,” 

皇帝さまが言いました。
said the emperor;

するとナイチンゲールが飛び出してきて、とっても愉快な声で歌いましたから、すぐにはだれも文句を言うことができませんでした。
then the nightingale was taken out, and it sang so beautifully that no one could possibly say anything unkind about it. 

「シュペルブ！　
“Superbe,

シャルマン！」
charmant,” 

侍女たちはフランス語でおどろきの声をあげました。
said the ladies of the court, 

侍女たちはフランス語をたしなんでいたからですが、おどろきの声は誰かが口を出すごとにひどくなっていきました。
for they all prattled French, one worse than the other. 

「その鳥の歌声は、なくなった皇后さまが持っていらしたオルゴールを思い出させますな。
“How much the bird reminds me of the musical box of the late lamented empress,” 


おお、それです！　
本当におんなじ音色、おんなじ演奏です」


年とった家臣が言いました。
said an old courtier, 
“it has exactly the same tone, the same execution.” 

「ほんとに、そうじゃな！」
“You are right,”

皇帝さまはそう言って思い返すと、子どものように泣きました。
said the emperor, and began to cry like a little child. 

「それでも、その鳥が本物じゃなかったらいいんだけど」
“I hope it is not natural,” 

お姫さまが言いました。
said the princess. 

「いいえ、これは本物の鳥でございます」
“Yes, certainly it is natural,”

この箱を運んできた者が言いました。
replied those who had brought the presents. 

「それなら、その鳥は飛ばしてやりなさい」
“Then let it fly,”

お姫さまは言いました。
said the princess,

そして、王子さまが会いにくるのを絶対に許そうとはしませんでした。
and refused to see the prince. 

けれども王子さまはめげませんでした。
But the prince was not discouraged.

かれは自分の顔に茶色と黒の泥を塗りつけて、耳が隠れるまで帽子をかぶりました。
He painted his face, put on common clothes, pulled his cap over his forehead, 

そして、皇帝さまのお屋敷の門をたたいたのです。
and came back. 

「ごめんください、皇帝さま！　
“Good day, emperor,”

このお屋敷でわたしを雇ってくださいませんか？」
王子さまが言いました。
he said,
“could you not give me some employment at the court?” 


replied the emperor, 
“who apply for places, that for the present I have no vacancy, but I will remember you.

「ほお、そうか。
But wait a moment; 
it just comes into my mind,

それならブタの世話を見てもらおうかな。
I require somebody to look after my pigs,

なんたって、ブタがいっぱいおるもんでな」
for I have a great many.” 


皇帝さまが言いました。


そうして王子さまは皇帝さまのところで「ブタ飼い」の仕事をすることになりました。
Thus the prince was appointed imperial swineherd, 

そして、ブタ小屋のそばにある小さな汚い小屋をいただきました。
and as such he lived in a wretchedly small room near the pigsty;

王子さまはそこに座り込むと、何やら仕事を始めました。
there he worked all day long, 

そして夕方には、かわいい小さなつぼを作りあげました。
and when it was night he had made a pretty little pot.

つぼのまわりには、たくさんの鈴がついていました。
There were little bells round the rim, 

つぼのお湯が沸くと、そのベルがとってもすてきな音を鳴らして、昔ながらのメロディを奏でるのでした。
and when the water began to boil in it, the bells began to play the old tune: 

「おお、愛しのアウグスティン、もう何にもない、ない、ない」
“A jolly old sow once lived in a sty, 
Three little piggies had she,”

しかもさらにおもしろいことに、そのつぼから出てくる湯気に手をかざせば、町中のおうちで何の料理が作られているかを、たちまちかぎ分けることができるのです。
But what was more wonderful was that, when one put a finger into the steam rising from the pot, one could at once smell what meals they were preparing on every fire in the whole town. 

ほら、これはまたバラとはまったくちがうものでしょ。
That was indeed much more remarkable than the rose.

さて、ちょうどお姫さまが歩いてきました。
When the princess with her ladies passed by 

お姫さまはこの鈴のメロディを聞くと、立ち止まって何だかうれしそうにしました。
and heard the tune, she stopped and looked quite pleased,

お姫さまはこの「愛しいアウグスティン」ならピアノでひくことができたからです。
in fact, it was the only tune she could play, and she ――

といっても、お姫さまがひけるのはこの一節だけで、しかも一本指でひくのですが。
in fact, it was the only tune she could play, and she played it with one finger. 

「ねえ、わたしもこの節ならひけるわよ」
“That is the tune I know,”

お姫さまが言いました。
she exclaimed.

「あのブタ飼いはきっと、学問のある人にちがいないわ！　
“He must be a well-educated swineherd. 

あそこへ行って、あの楽器がいくらするのか聞いてきてちょうだい」
Go and ask him how much the instrument is.” 

そこで、侍女のひとりが聞きにいくことになりました。
One of the ladies had to go and ask;

けれども、そのまえに彼女は泥よけの木靴にはきかえて行きました。
but she put on pattens. 

「そのつぼをゆずってくださらない？」
“What will you take for your pot?”

侍女が聞きました。
asked the lady. 

「それじゃ、お姫さまのキスを十ください」
“I will have ten kisses from the princess,”

ブタ飼いが答えました。
said the swineherd. 

「まあ、なんてことなの！」
“God forbid,” 

侍女が言いました。
said the lady. 

「それ以下じゃ、おゆずりできません」
“Well, I cannot sell it for less,”

ブタ飼いが答えました。
replied the swineherd. 


“What did he say?”
said the princess. 
“I really cannot tell you,” 
replied the lady. 
“You can whisper it into my ear.” 


「ほんとに、ずうずうしいやつね！」
“It is very naughty,” 

お姫さまはそう言って歩き出しましたが、
said the princess, and walked off. 

少し進むとまたあのベルのすてきな音が鳴り始めました。
But when she had gone a little distance, the bells rang again so sweetly: 

「おお、愛しのアウグスティン、もう何にもない、ない、ない」
“A jolly old sow once lived in a sty,
  Three little piggies had she,”

「まって、あの人に、侍女のキスを十でもいいかって聞いてきてちょうだい」
お姫さまが言いました。
“Ask him,” 
said the princess, 
“if he will be satisfied with ten kisses from one of my ladies.” 

「いやだめです！」
“No, thank you,”

ブタ飼いは答えました。
said the swineherd:

「お姫さまのキスを十です。
“ten kisses from the princess,

だめならつぼはおゆずりしません」
or I keep my pot.” 

「そんなのなしよ！」
“That is tiresome,”

お姫さまが言いました。
said the princess.

「じゃあ、あんたたち、だれにも見られないように、あたしの前に立っててちょうだい」
“But you must stand before me, so that nobody can see it.”  

そこで侍女たちはドレスを広げてお姫さまの前に立ちました。
The ladies placed themselves in front of her and spread out their dresses,

そうして、ブタ飼いはお姫さまのキスをもらいました。
and she gave the swineherd ten kisses 

そしてお姫さまはつぼをもらったのです。
and received the pot. 

ほんとにおもしろいことでした！　
That was a pleasure!

お姫さまたちは、その日の夕方も、次の日もつぼでお湯を沸かしました。
Day and night the water in the pot was boiling; 

お姫さまたちは、この町の中ならどこのおうちでも何の料理を作っているのか、すっかり分かるのです。
there was not a single fire in the whole town of which they did not know what was preparing on it, 

お屋敷の執事のおうちから、靴屋さんのおうちまで。
the chamberlain’s as well as the shoemaker’s.

侍女たちは手を叩いたり踊ったりしながらよろこびました。
The ladies danced and clapped their hands for joy. 

「わたしたち、今日の夕飯にだれがスープを飲むのかも、だれがパンケーキを食べるのかも分かるのよ。
“We know who will eat soup and pancakes; 

だれがカツレツを食べるのかも、だれが卵を食べるのかも。
we know who will eat porridge and cutlets;

ほんと、おもしろいわ！」
oh, how interesting!” 

「ほんと。
“Very interesting, indeed,”


said the mistress of the household.


でもこれは秘密よ。
“But you must not betray me,

だって、わたしは皇帝の娘なんだから」
for I am the emperor’s daughter.” 


“Of course not,” 
they all said. 


あのブタ飼いは本当は王子さまなのですが、だれもがただの恵まれないブタ飼いなんだと思っていました。
The swineherd――that is to say, the prince――but they did not know otherwise than that he was a real swineherd

その王子さまは、一日とて何もせずに過ごしたりはしませんでした。
――did not waste a single day without doing something; 

そしてこんどはガラガラを作りました。
he made a rattle,

そのガラガラを回すと、ワルツやジーグや、これまでに世の中で作られたどんな曲でも奏でることができるのです。
which, when turned quickly round, played all the waltzes, galops, and polkas known since the creation of the world. 

「まあ、すごいわ！」
“But that is superbe,” 

お姫さまがそこを通りかかったときに言いました。
said the princess passing by.

「あたし、こんなにすてきな曲は聞いたことがないわ。
“I have never heard a more beautiful composition.

あそこへ行って、あの楽器がいくらなのか聞いてきてちょうだい。
Go down and ask him what the instrument costs;

でも、もうキスはしませんからね！」
but I shall not kiss him again.” 

「お姫さまのキスを百くれと言っています！」
“He will have a hundred kisses from the princess,”

ブタ飼いに聞いてきた侍女が言いました。
said the lady, who had gone down to ask him. 

「あいつは頭がどうかしてるんだわ！」
“I believe he is mad,”

お姫さまが言いました。
said the princess,

そうして歩き出しましたが、少し進むとお姫さまはまた立ち止まりました。
and walked off, but soon she stopped. 

「芸術は奨励するものだわ」
“One must encourage art,”

お姫さまは言いました。
she said.

「あたしは皇帝の娘なのよ。
“I am the emperor’s daughter! 

あの人に言ってちょうだい。
Tell him 

あたしが昨日みたくキスを十するから、
I will give him ten kisses, as I did the other day;

あとは侍女たちにしてもらいなさいって」
the remainder one of my ladies can give him.” 


「ええ。


でも、わたしたちはそんなこと、したくありません！」
“But we do not like to kiss him”

侍女たちが言いました。
said the ladies. 

「なにを言ってるの？」
“That is nonsense,”

お姫さまが言いました。
said the princess;

「あたしだってキスするんだから、あんたたちだってできるでしょ。
“if I can kiss him, you can also do it. 

いいこと、それがあんたたちの仕事なの」
Remember that I give you food and employment.”

そうして、侍女たちはまたブタ飼いのほうへ行きました。
And the lady had to go down once more. 

「お姫さまのキスを百です！」
“A hundred kisses from the princess,”

ブタ飼いが言いました。
said the swineherd,

「そうじゃないなら、だれにもこれはあげられません！」
“or everybody keeps his own.” 

「まわりに立っててちょうだい！」
“Place yourselves before me,”

お姫さまがそう言うと、
said the princess then.

キスをしているあいだ、侍女たちはお姫さまのまわりに立っていました。
They did as they were bidden, and the princess kissed him. 

「ブタ小屋のまわりが、やけにさわがしいようだが、どうしたわけだ？」
“I wonder what that crowd near the pigsty means!”

ちょうどバルコニーに出てきた皇帝さまが言いました。
said the emperor, who had just come out on his balcony.

かれは目をこすって、メガネをかけました。
He rubbed his eyes and put his spectacles on. 

「あそこにいるのは侍女たちだな。
“The ladies of the court are up to some mischief, I think.

あっちへ行って、何をしてるのか見てやろう！」
I shall have to go down and see.”

皇帝さまはスリッパのかかとを引き上げました。
He pulled up his shoes, 

皇帝さまはかかとをふんずけて歩いていたからです。
for they were down at the heels, 


and he was very quick about it.


皇帝さまはお庭に出てくると、そーっと歩き始めました。
When he had come down into the courtyard he walked quite softly, 

侍女たちはキスをきちんとやっているか数えるのに夢中で、皇帝さまがやってきたことには気づきませんでした。
and the ladies were so busily engaged in counting the kisses, that all should be fair, that they did not notice the emperor. 

皇帝さまはつま先立ちでのぞきこみました。
He raised himself on tiptoe.  

「これはいったい何だ？」
“What does this mean?”

皇帝さまはそこで何をしているのか見えたとたんに叫びました。
he said, when he saw that his daughter was kissing the swineherd,

そしてブタ飼いがちょうど86回目のキスをもらっているときに、お姫さまの頭をスリッパで叩きました。
and then hit their heads with his shoe just as the swineherd received the sixty-eighth kiss. 

「出て行くんだ！」
“Go out of my sight,”

皇帝さまはとても怒って言いました。
said the emperor, for he was very angry;

それでお姫さまとブタ飼いは町から追い出されてしまいました。
and both the princess and the swineherd were banished from the empire.

お姫さまは立ち止まって泣きました。
There she stood and cried,

ブタ飼いはぶつぶつ言っています。
the swineherd scolded her,

さらに雨がはげしく降ってきました。
and the rain came down in torrents. 

「ああ！　
“Alas,

あたしはなんて不幸せなんでしょう！」
unfortunate creature that I am!”

お姫さまが言いました。
said the princess,

「あのすてきな若い王子さまと結婚していれば！　
“I wish I had accepted the prince.

ああ！　
Oh,

なんて不幸なのかしら！」
how wretched I am!” 

するとブタ飼いは木かげのほうへ行って、黒や茶色の泥を顔から洗い落としました。
The swineherd went behind a tree, wiped his face, 

それからきたない服を脱ぐと、自分の王子さまの服を着てから出てきました。
threw off his poor attire and stepped forth in his princely garments;

こうなると王子さまはとっても上品に見えて、お姫さまも王子さまにおじぎをせずにはいられないほどでした。
he looked so beautiful that the princess could not help bowing to him. 

「ぼくはあなたを軽蔑しますよ」
“I have now learnt to despise you,”

王子さまが言いました。
he said.

「あなたは立派な王子をむかえようとはしなかった！　
“You refused an honest prince; 

あなたはあのバラやナイチンゲールの価値も分からなかった。
you did not appreciate the rose and the nightingale; 

それなのにあなたは、あんなくだらないおもちゃのためにはブタ飼いにだってキスしようとする。
but you did not mind kissing a swineherd for his toys;

その報いをいま受けるのです」
you have no one but yourself to blame!” 

そう言うと王子さまは自分の小さな国に戻って、お姫さまの目の前で宮殿のドアを閉めてしまいました。
And then he returned into his kingdom and left her behind. 

ですから、いまはお姫さまがこう歌っているのです。
She could now sing at her leisure: 

「おお、愛しのアウグスティン、もう何にもない、ない、ない」
“A jolly old sow once lived in a sty,
Three little piggies has she,”
