ぶたが詩を歌っているころ Once upon a time when pigs spoke rhyme さるはタバコを噛んでいた And monkeys chewed tobacco, めんどり雑にタバコを吸って And hens took snuff to make them tough, アヒルはガーガと鳴いている And ducks went quack, quack, quack, O! 昔々、三匹の子ぶたを産んだ母ぶたがいました。 THERE was an old sow with three little pigs 母ぶたは子ぶたを育てていくことができなかったので、子ぶたの将来を想って外に出すことにしました。 and as she had not enough to keep them, she sent them out to seek their fortune 最初に出ていった子ぶたはわらの束を持った男に出会いました。 The first that went off met a man with a bundle of straw, そこで子ぶたは言いました。 and said to him 「ねぇおじさん、家を建てたいんでわらをちょうだいな。」 Please, man, give me that straw to build a house. 男は子ぶたにわらをあげました。 Which the man did, 子ぶたはわらで家を造り、そこに住むことにしました。 and the little pig built a house with it. ほどなく、おおかみがやってきてドアをノックしました。 Presently came along a wolf, and knocked at the door, and said: 「子ぶたさん、子ぶたさん、中に入れてくださいな。」 Little pig, little pig, let me come in. それを聞いて、子ぶたはこう答えました。 To which the pig answered: 「ダメダメ、ぼくのちっちゃなおひげにかけてダメだよ。」 No, no, by the hair of my chiny chin chin. 「だったらこの家を、ひと吹きでプーと吹き飛ばしてやるぞ。」 Then I'll huff, and I'll puff, and I'll blow your house in. そしておおかみは息を吸い、吹きました。 So he huffed, and he puffed, おおかみはわらの家を吹き飛ばして、子ぶたを食べてしまいました。 and he blew his house in, and ate up the little pig. 二匹目の子ぶたはシダの束を持った男に出会いました。 The second little pig met a man with a bundle of furze そこで子ぶたは言いました。 and said: 「ねぇおじさん、家を建てたいんでシダをちょうだいな。」 Please, man, give me that furze to build a house. 男は子ぶたにシダをあげました。 Which the man did, 子ぶたはシダで家を造り、そこに住むことにしました。 and the pig built his house. すると、おおかみがやってきてドアをノックしました。 Then along came the wolf, and said: 「子ぶたさん、子ぶたさん、中に入れてくださいな。」 Little pig, little pig, let me come in. 「ダメダメ、ぼくのちっちゃなおひげにかけてダメだよ。」 No, no, by the hair of my chiny chin chin. 「だったらこの家を、ひと吹きでプーと吹き飛ばしてやるぞ。」 "Then I'll huff, and I'll puff,and I'll blow your house in. そしておおかみは息を吸い、吹きました。 So he huffed, and he puffed, and he puffed, また吸って、吹きました。 and he huffed, やがておおかみは、シダの家を吹き飛ばして、子ぶたを食べてしまいました。 and at last he blew the house down, and he ate up the little pig. 三匹目の子ぶたはレンガをいっぱい持った男に出会いました。 The third little pig met a man with a load of bricks, そこで子ぶたは言いました。 and said: 「ねぇおじさん、家を建てたいんでレンガをちょうだいな。」 Please, man, give me those bricks to build a house with. 男は子ぶたにレンガをあげました。 So the man gave him the bricks, 子ぶたはレンガで家を造り、そこに住むことにしました。 and he built his house with them. やがて、おおかみがやってきてドアをノックしました。 So the wolf came, as he did to the other little pigs, and said: 「子ぶたさん、子ぶたさん、中に入れてくださいな。」 Little pig, little pig, let me come in. それを聞いて、子ぶたはこう答えました。 「ダメダメ、ぼくのちっちゃなおひげにかけてダメだよ。」 No, no, by the hair of my chiny chin chin. 「だったらこの家を、ひと吹きでプーと吹き飛ばしてやるぞ。」 Then I'll huff, and I'll puff, and I'll blow your house in. そしておおかみは息を吸い、吹きました。 Well, he huffed, and he puffed, また吸って、吹きました。 and he huffed and he puffed, 何回も吸っては吹き、吸っては吹きをくりかえしました。 and he puffed and huffed; けれども、レンガの家を吹き飛ばすことはできませんでした。 but he could not get the house down. おおかみは、レンガの家をいくら吹いても吹き飛ばせないことが分かりましたので、子ぶたにこう言いました。 When he found that he could not, with all his huffing and puffing, blow the house down, he said: 「子ぶたさん、カブがいっぱい生えているところをぼくは知ってるんだ。」 Little pig, I know where there is a nice field of turnips. 「どこだい?」 Where? 子ぶたは聞きました。 said the little pig. 「それはね、スミスさんちの畑なんだ。明日の朝起きていてくれたら、ぼくが子ぶ たさんを呼びに来るから、一緒に行って、食事をしようよ。」 Oh, in Mr Smith's Home-field, and if you will be ready tomorrow morning I will call for you, and we will go together, and get some for dinner. 「いいねぇ。じゃあ待ってるよ。何時に会うことにしようか?」 Very well, said the little pig, I will be ready. What time do you mean to go? 「六時にしようか。」 Oh, at six o'clock. 次の日、子ぶたは五時に起きて、おおかみが来る前にカブを取ってきてしまいました。 Well, the little pig got up at five, and got the turnips before the wolf came おおかみは六時にやってきて、子ぶたを呼びました。 (which he did about six), who said: 「子ぶたさん、準備はできたかい?」 Little pig, are you ready? 子ぶたはこう答えました。 The little pig said: 「もういいよ! ぼくはもうカブを取って来ちゃったんだ。朝ご飯においしいポトフができたよ。」 Ready! I have been and come back again, and got a nice potful for dinner. おおかみはこれを聞いて、怒ってしまいました。 The wolf felt very angry at this, でも、なんとかして子ぶたをまいらせてしまおうと考えて、こう言いました。 but thought that he would be up to the little pig somehow or other, so he said: 「子ぶたさん、いいリンゴの木があるところをぼくは知ってるんだ。」 Little pig, I know where there is a nice apple tree. 「どこだい?」 Where? 子ぶたは聞きました。 said the pig. 「メリーガーデンの下なんだ。もし子ぶたさんがぼくにウソをつく気がなかった ら、明日の四時にむかえに来るよ。そしてリンゴを採ろうよ。」 Down at Merry-garden,' replied the wolf,'and if you will not deceive me I will come for you at five o'clock tomorrow. and get some apples. 次の日、朝四時にはもう子ぶたは起きていて、リンゴをとりに出かけていました。 Well, the little pig bustled up the next morning at four o'clock, and went off for the apples, おおかみが来る前に、家に帰るつもりでいたのです。 hoping to get back before the wolf came; ですが、リンゴの木は遠くにありましたし、木に登らないとリンゴは採れませんでした。 but he had further to go, and had to climb the tree, そのため、子ぶたがリンゴの木から降りようとしていると、おおかみがやってきてしまったのです。 so that just as he was coming down from it, he saw the wolf coming, 当然のことですが、子ぶたはとても恐くなりました。 which, as you may suppose, frightened him very much. やがて、おおかみが木の下にやってきて、こう言いました。 When the wolf came up he said: 「子ぶたさん、なんでぼくより早くここにいるのさ! いいリンゴは見つかったか い?」 Little pig, what! are you here before me? Are they nice apples? 「あぁ、とってもいいよ。」 Yes, very, 子ぶたは言いました。 said the little pig. 「きみにもひとつ、投げてあげるよ。」 I will throw you down one. そして、おもいっきり遠くにリンゴを投げました。 And he threw it so far, おおかみはリンゴを取りに行きました。 that, while the wolf was gone to pick it up, そのすきに子ぶたは木から飛び降りて、走って家に帰ってしまいました。 the little pig jumped down and ran home. 次の日、おおかみがやってきて子ぶたにこう言いました。 The next day the wolf came again, and said to the little pig: 「子ぶたさん、今日の昼からシャンクリンでお祭りがあるんだけど、子ぶたさんは行く?」 Little pig, there is a fair at Shanklin this afternoon, will you go? 「あぁ、行くよ。何時に待ってればいい?」 Oh yes,' said the pig, 'I will go; what time shall you be ready? 「三時にしよう。」 At three, おおかみは言いました。 said the wolf. それを聞いた子ぶたは、約束より早くお祭りに出かけて、大きなバター缶を買いました。 So the little pig went off before the time as usual, and got to the fair, and bought a butter-churn, 家に帰る途中、おおかみがやってくるのが遠くに見えました。 which he was going home with, when he saw the wolf coming. 子ぶたはもう何も言えませんでした。 Then he could not tell what to do. ですから、バター缶の中に入り、転がっていくことにしました。 So he got into the churn to hide, and by so doing turned it round, バター缶は子ぶたをのせて転がっていきます。 and it rolled down the hill with the pig in it, おおかみはそれを見て、とてもびっくりしました。 which frightened the wolf so much, お祭りも見ないで、走って帰っていきました。 that he ran home without going to the fair. そして、子ぶたの家に行って、丘から転がってくる何か大きいものに追いかけられて、とても恐かったことを、子ぶたに話しました。 He went to the little pig's house, and told him how frightened he had been by a great round thing which came down the hill past him. それを聞いて、子ぶたはこう言いました。 Then the little pig said: 「ハハハ、ぼくはきみが恐かったんだよ。お祭りに行って、バター缶を買ったんだ。そのあと、きみの姿が見えたんで、バター缶の中に入って、転がっていったんだよ。」 Hah, I frightened you, then. I had been to the fair and bought a butter-churn, and when I saw you, I got into it, and rolled down the hill. それを聞いておおかみは大変怒ってしまいました。 Then the wolf was very angry indeed, お前を食ってやると子ぶたに言って、子ぶたの家のえんとつを降りようとしました。 and declared he would eat up the little pig, and that he would get down the chimney after him. 子ぶたはそれを見て、水を入れた深なべをかけ、火をがんがん焚きました。 When the little pig saw what he was about, he hung on the pot full of water, and made up a blazing fire, そして、おおかみが降りてきたときに、なべのふたを取りました。 and, just as the wolf was coming down, took off the cover, すると、おおかみはなべの中に落ちてしまいました。 and in fell the wolf; 子ぶたはすぐなべのふたをしてその上に乗っかり、おおかみを煮てしまいました。 so the little pig put on the cover again in an instant, boiled him up, その日の夕食におおかみの肉を食べて、そしていつまでも幸せに暮らしていきましたとさ。 and ate him for supper, and lived happy ever afterwards.
