昔々、アテネという都市に１つの法律が施行されていた。
There was a law in the city of Athens 

その法律によれば、その都市の市民は、娘を自分が決めた人と結婚させることができる権限を持っていた。
which gave to its citizens the power of  compelling their daughters to marry whomsoever they pleased;

もしも娘があくまでも、父が娘むこに選んだ男との結婚を拒んだときには、父は法律に従って、娘を死刑に処する権限を持っていた。
for upon a daughter's refusing to marry the man her father had chosen to be her husband, the father was empowered by this law to cause her to be put to death;

しかし、父というものは、自分の娘の死など望まないのが常なので、娘が少しくらい意地をはったところで、この法律はめったに実行されることはなかった。
but as fathers do not often desire the death of their own daughters, even though they do happen to prove a little refractory, this law was seldom or never put in execution,

もちろん、その都市の娘たちは、両親たちの脅しによって、この法律の恐ろしさを知っていただろうということは想像に難くない。
though perhaps the young ladies of that city were not unfrequently threatened by their parents with the terrors of it.

　ところである時、イージアスという老人がこの都市にいたのであるが、この人がシーシアス（当時アテネを治めていた君主）の前に進み出て、実際に娘のハーミアを死刑にしていただきたいと訴えでたのである。
There was one instance, however, of an old man, whose name was Egeus, who actually did come before Theseus (at that time the reigning Duke of Athens), to complain 

イージアスは娘に、アテネ在住の貴族の出であるディミートリアスという青年と結婚するように命じたのであるが、娘は、ライサンダーというアテネ人を愛していたために、父に従うことを拒否したのだ。
that his daughter whom he had commanded to marry Demetrius, a young man of a noble Athenian family, refused to obey him, because she loved another young Athenian, named Lysander. 

イージアスはシーシアスに、裁判を開いて、この残酷な法に従って娘を死刑にしていただきたいと願い出たのである。
Egeus demanded justice of Theseus, and desired that this cruel law might be put in force against his daughter.

ハーミアは、父の命令に従わない理由として、以下のようなことを言った。
Hermia pleaded in excuse for her disobedience

ディミートリアスは、自分の親友であるヘレナに愛を告白したことがあります。
that Demetrius had formerly professed love for her dear friend Helena,

ヘレナは彼のことを気も狂わんばかりに愛しております。
and that Helena loved Demetrius to distraction;

しかし、ハーミアが父の命令に従わない理由として挙げた、もっともな理由でさえ、厳格なイージアスの心を動かすには至らなかった。
but this honorable reason, which Hermia gave for not obeying her father's command, moved not the stern Egeus.

シーシアスは偉大なる君主であり、慈悲深い人であったけれども、自らの国の法律を変える権限を持っていなかったので、ハーミアに４日間の猶予期間を与えることしかできなかった。
Theseus, though a great and merciful prince, had no power to alter the laws of his country; therefore he could only give Hermia four days to consider of it:

もしその期間が終わっても、彼女がまだディミートリアスとの結婚を拒めば、彼女は死刑となることに決まってしまったのだった。
and at the end of that time, if she still refused to marry Demetrius, she was to be put to death.

ハーミアは、君主の御前を辞したあとに、愛するライサンダーのもとを訪ね、彼女の身にふりかかった危険を告げて、ライサンダーをあきらめてディミートリアスと結婚するか、４日後に命を失うか、２つに１つになった、と語った。
When Hermia was dismissed from the presence of the duke, she went to her lover Lysander and told him the peril she was in, and that she must either give him up and marry Demetrius or lose her life in four days.

ライサンダーは、このようなひどい知らせに対して深い痛みを覚えた。
Lysander was in great affliction at hearing these evil tidings;

しかし、彼のおばがアテネから離れた場所に住んでいるのを思いだし、おばの住むところでは、あの残酷な法律もハーミアに何ら適用されないこと（この法律は、アテネの境界内にしか通用しなかった）に気づいた。
but, recollecting that be had an aunt who lived at some distance from Athens, and that at the place where she lived the cruel law could not be put in force against Hermia (this law not extending beyond the boundaries of the city),

そこで、ライサンダーは、ハーミアにこう提案した。
he proposed to Hermia

夜になったら、父の家から抜けだして、自分とともにおばの家へ行こう、そして、そこで結婚しよう。
that she should steal out of her father's house that night, and go with him to his aunt's house, where he would marry her.

「町の外、何マイルか離れた場所にある森で落ち会うことにしよう。」ライサンダーは言った。
"I will meet you," said Lysander, "in the wood a few miles without the city;

「ぼくたちが、ヘレナと一緒にあの楽しい５月に［＃注１］よく散歩した、あの愉快な森の中で。」
in that delightful wood where we have so often walked with Helena in the pleasant month of May."

この提案に、ハーミアは喜んで同意した。
To this proposal Hermia joyfully agreed;

そして、家出のことは誰にも話さなかったが、親友であるヘレナにだけはうちあけた。
and she told no one of her intended flight but her friend Helena.

ヘレナは（娘というものは、恋のためには実におろかなことをするものであるが）たいへんばかなことに、ディミートリアスのところへ行ってこの話をしようと決心した。
Helena (as maidens will do foolish things for love) very ungenerously resolved to go and tell this to Demetrius,

ヘレナは親友の秘密を暴くことで報酬を期待してはいなかった。
though she could hope no benefit from betraying her friend's secret

ただ、森へ行った不実な恋人の後を追おうというささやかな望みがあっただけであった。
but the poor pleasure of following her faithless lover to the wood;

ヘレナには、ディミートリアスがハーミアの後を追っていくだろう、ということがよく分かっていたのだ。
for she well knew that Demetrius would go thither in pursuit of Hermia.

さて、ライサンダーとハーミアが会うことにしていた森は、妖精《フェアリー》という名で知られている小さな人が集まる場所だった。
The wood in which Lysander and Hermia proposed to meet was the favorite haunt of those little beings known by the name of "fairies."

妖精《フェアリー》の王であるオーベロンと、女王であるティターニアは、おおぜいの小人たちとともに、この森で深夜の宴会を開いていた。
Oberon the king, and Titania the queen of the fairies, with all their tiny train of followers, in this wood held their midnight revels.

妖精《フェアリー》の王と女王の間には、このごろ悲しい仲違いが起こっていた。
Between this little king and queen of sprites there happened, at this time, a sad disagreement;

２人がこの愉しい森の、月明かりに照らされた木陰の道で会うと必ずけんかが始まるので、配下の妖精《フェアリー》すべてが２人を怖がって、みんなどんぐりのさらの中へはいこんで隠れてしまうようになってしまった。
they never met by moonlight in the shady walk of this pleasant wood but they were quarreling, till all their fairy elves would creep into acorn-cups and hide themselves for fear.

不幸な仲違いの原因は、ティターニアがオーベロンに小さいとりかえ子［＃注２］を与えるのを拒んだからである。
The cause of this unhappy disagreement was Titania's refusing give Oberon a little changeling boy,

その子はティターニアの友達が産んだ子で、彼女が死んだあとは女王が、乳母の手からその子を盗んで、森の中で育ててきたのだ。
whose mother had been Titania's friend; and upon her death the fairy queen stole the child from its nurse and brought him up in the woods.

恋人たちが森で待ち合わせをしていた夜、ティターニアが侍女を従えて歩いていると、妖精《フェアリー》の家来を従えたオーベロンに出会った。
The night on which the lovers were to meet in this wood, as Titania was walking with some of her maids of honor, she met Oberon attended by his train of fairy courtiers.

「月明かりで、運悪くも会ってしまったね、高慢なティターニア。」
"Ill met by moonlight, proud Titania,"

妖精《フェアリー》の王が言った。
said the fairy king.

「あら、やきもち焼きのオーベロン、いかがなさって？　
The queen replied: "What, jealous Oberon, is it you?

妖精《フェアリー》たち、早く立ち去りましょう。
Fairies, skip hence;

私はあの人と一緒にいないことに決めてますから。」
I have forsworn his company."

女王が答えた。


「待ちなさい、せっかちな妖精《フェアリー》。」
"Tarry, rash fairy,"

オーベロンが言った。
said Oberon.

「私はそなたの夫ではないか。
"Am I not thy lord?

なぜティターニアは私に逆らうのかね？
Why does Titania cross her Oberon?

君の小さなとりかえ子を私の小姓にもらえないか。」
Give me your little changeling boy to be my page."

「心配無用。」
"Set your heart at rest,"

女王は答えた。
answered the queen;

「あなたの王国全部を差し出すと言われても、あの子を手放す気はありませんから。」
"your whole fairy kingdom buys not the boy of me."

そして、怒りに燃えた夫を残して立ち去った。
She then left her lord in great anger.

「ようし、勝手にするがいい。」
"Well, go your way,"

オーベロンは言った。
said Oberon;

「朝がくる前に、その無礼に対して仕返ししてやる。」
"before the morning dawns I will torment you for this injury."

そして、オーベロンは、第一のお気に入りで普段から腹心と頼みにしている、パックを呼んだ。
Oberon then sent for Puck, his chief favorite and privy counselor.

パック（時々ロビン・グットフェローとも呼ばれている）はいたずら好きの腕白な妖精《フェアリー》で、近隣の村に微笑ましいいたずらを仕掛けるのを常としていた。
Puck (or, as he was sometimes called, Robin Goodfellow) was a shrewd and knavish sprite, that used to play comical pranks in the neighboring villages;

ときどき彼は、バター作りをしているところに入り込んでミルクをすすったり、バターを作る攪《かく》乳器の中に、空気のように軽い体をつっこんだりした。
sometimes getting into the dairies and skimming the milk, sometimes plunging his light and airy form into the butter-churn,

パックが攪《かく》乳器の中で体を踊らせているときには、乳しぼりの女がいくらバターをクリームにしようとしても無駄だった。
and while he was dancing his fantastic shape in the churn, in vain the dairymaid would labor to change her cream into butter.

村の若者たちでもだめだった。
Nor had the village swains any better success;

パックが醸造用の銅がまの中でいたずらをしようとしたなら、確実にビールは台無しだった。
whenever Puck chose to play his freaks in the brewing copper, the ale was sure to be spoiled.

村の良き隣人たちが集まって、一緒にビールを飲んでいると、パックは焼きりんごに化けてビールの中に飛び込んだり、どこかのおばあさんが飲もうとすると、その唇にひょいと触れて、しわくちゃのあごにビールをこぼさせたりしていた。
When a few good neighbors were met to drink some comfortable ale together, Puck would jump into the bowl of ale in the likeness of a roasted crab, and when some old goody was going to drink he would bob against her lips, and spill the ale over her withered chin; 

その後のことだが、例のおばあさんが隣人に、大まじめにもの悲しい話をしようとして、礼儀正しく椅子に座ろうとしていたときに、パックが三脚いすをすべらせて、おばあさんに尻もちをさせてしまったことがあった。
and presently after, when the same old dame was gravely seating herself to tell her neighbors a sad and melancholy story, Puck would slip her three-legged stool from under her, and down toppled the poor old woman,

そのとき一座の老人たちは腹をかかえて大笑い。
and then the old gossips would hold their sides and laugh at her,

こんなに楽しかったことはないと口々にいうのだった。
and swear they never wasted a merrier hour.

「こっちへおいで、パック。」
"Come hither, Puck,"

オーベロンはこの小さなふざけんぼうの、夜の放浪者に言った。
said Oberon to this little merry wanderer of the night;

「娘たちが、なまけんぼうの恋花と呼んでいる花を持ってきなさい。
"fetch me the flower which maids call 'Love in, Idleness';

その、紫色の花の汁を、眠っている人のまぶたに垂らすと、その作用で、その人が起きたときに最初に目にはいったものを愛するようになる。
the juice of that little purple flower laid on the eyelids of those who sleep will make them, when they awake, dote on the first thing they see.

その花の汁を、ティターミアが眠っているときにまぶたに落としてやろうと思う。
Some of the juice of that flower I will drop on the eyelids of my Titania when she is asleep;

彼女は目を開けて最初に見るものと恋に落ちるんだ、それがライオンや熊や、おせっかいな猿や気ぜわしい尾なし猿だったとしてもね。
and the first thing she looks upon when she opens her eyes she will fall in love with, even though it be a lion or a bear, a meddling monkey or a busy ape;

私がこの魔法を取り除くまえに――これは私の知っている別の魔法でできるんだ――あの少年を私の小姓にすることに同意させよう。」
and before I will take this charm from off her sight, which I can do with another charm I know of, I will make her give me that boy to be my page."

パックはいたずらが心から好きだったので、主人が提案したこのいたずらに対してもとても喜んで、その花を探しに走っていった。
Puck, who loved mischief to his heart, was highly diverted with this intended frolic of his master, and ran to seek the flower;

一方、オーベロンは、パックが帰ってくるのを待つ間に、ディミートリアスとヘレナが森に入ってきたのを見ていた。
and while Oberon was waiting the return of Puck he observed Demetrius and Helena enter the wood:

また、ディミートリアスがヘレナに、ついてくるなと言っているのをもれ聞いた。
he overheard Demetrius reproaching Helena for following him,

ディミートリアスが冷たい言葉を数多くヘレナに言ったのに対して、ヘレナの方では、男がむかし自分に言った告白と、彼女への愛情を思いだしてくれと彼をいさめていた。
and after many unkind words on his part, and gentle expostulations from Helena, reminding him of his former love and professions of true faith to her, 

ついに男は、野獣にでも食われてしまえと（まさにそう言ったのだ）言い捨てて去ってしまい、女は懸命に男を追っかけていった。
he left her (as he said) to the mercy of the wild beasts, and she ran after him as swiftly as she could.

妖精《フェアリー》の王は、いつも恋人たちに親切だったので、ヘレナに対して深く同情した。
The fairy king, who was always friendly to true lovers, felt great compassion for Helena;

もちろん、ライサンダーが言うところによれば、この愉快な森を月明かりでよく歩いていたのだから、たぶんオーベロンはディミートリアスに愛されていたときの幸せなヘレナを見たことがあるだろう。
and perhaps, as Lysander said they used to walk by moonlight in this pleasant wood, Oberon might have seen Helena in those happy times when she was beloved by Demetrius.

そうこうするうちに、パックが小さな紫花を持って帰ってきたので、オーベロンは彼のお気に入りにこう言った。
However that might be, when Puck returned with the little purple flower, Oberon said to his favorite:

「この花を少し持っていきなさい。
"Take a part of this flower;

ここにかわいいアテネ人の娘がいるんだ。
there has been a sweet Athenian lady here, 

彼女は自分を軽蔑している青年を愛している。
who is in love with a disdainful youth;

もし男が寝ているのを見つけたら、その目に愛の汁を垂らしなさい。
if you find him sleeping, drop some of the love-juice in his eyes,

ただし、娘がその男のそばにいるときに垂らすようにするんだ。
but contrive to do it when she is near him,

目を覚ました男が最初に見るのが、彼にきらわれている娘であるようにね。
that the first thing he sees when he awakes may be this despised lady.

彼が着ているアテネ風の服でその男は分かるだろう。」
You will know the man ]by the Athenian garments which be wears."

パックは、できる限りうまくやりましょうと答えた。
Puck promised to manage this matter very dexterously:

オーベロンはティターミアに見つからないように、彼女の寝室へ出向いた。
and then Oberon went, unperceived by Titania, to her bower,

そのときティターミアは休む支度をしていた。
where she was preparing to go to rest.

彼女の優美な寝室は堤であり、そこには野生のたちじゃこう草やきばらのくりんざくらや、匂いのいいすみれが、すいかずらやじゃこうばらや、赤い野ばらでできた天蓋の下に咲いていた。
Her fairy bower was a bank, where grew wild thyme, cowslips, and sweet violets, under a canopy of woodbine, musk-roses, and eglantine. 

ティターミアはいつもそこでしばらく眠ることにしていた。
There Titania always slept some part of the night;

かけぶとんはエナメルを塗った蛇の皮で、小さなおおいだったけれども、ティターミアを包み込むには十分な大きさであった。
her coverlet the enameled skin of a snake, which, though a small mantle, was wide enough to wrap a fairy in.

オーベロンは、ティターミアが侍女たちに、自分が寝ている間にやっておくべき仕事を告げているところを見つけた。
He found Titania giving orders to her fairies, how they were to employ themselves while she slept.

女王はこう言っていた。
「誰か、じゃこうばらのつぼみにひそんでいる害虫を殺しておきなさい。
"Some of you," said her Majesty, "must kill cankers in the musk-rose buds,

それから、こうもりと戦って、皮の翼をとっておくように。
and some wage war with the bats for their leathern wings, 

これは、私のかわいい妖精《フェアリー》たちの上着を作るのに使います。
to make my small elves coats;

それから、夜ごとにほうほう鳴く、やかましいふくろうが私のそばに近づかないように、見張りをしておきなさい。
and some of you keep watch that the clamorous owl, that nightly boots, come not near me:

だけど、まずは歌を歌って私を寝かせてちょうだいな。」
but first sing me to sleep."

そこで、皆はこんな歌を歌い始めた。
Then they began to sing this song:


舌がふたつのまだらへび
"You spotted snakes, with double tongue,

姿見せるな　はりねずみ
Thorny hedgehogs, be not seen;

いもりやとかげ　いたずらするな
Newts and blind-worms do no wrong;

我らが女王にちかよるな
Come not near our fairy queen:


ナイチンゲールよ　いい節で
"Philomel, with melody,

いっしょに歌おう　子守歌
Sing in our sweet lullaby;

ルラ　ルラ　ルラバイ　ルラ　ルラ　ルラバイ
Lulla, lulla, lullaby; lulla, lulla, lullaby;

わるさも　呪文も　魔法の力も
Never harm, nor spell, nor charm,

お妃さまには　ちかよるな
Come our lovely lady nigh;

お休みなさい　子守歌《ララバイ》きいて
So, good night, with lullaby."

侍女たちは、このようなかわいい子守歌で彼らの女王を寝かしつけた後に、女王に命じられた大事な用事を果たすために、女王のそばを離れていった。
When the fairies had sung their queen asleep with this pretty lullaby, they left her to perform the important services she had enjoined them.

オーベロンは、それを見届けた後でそっとティターミアに近づき、まぶたに愛の汁を落としてこう言った。
Oberon then softly drew near his Titania and dropped some of the love-juice on her eyelids, saying:

「目覚めてお前が見たものを、まことの恋人と思いなさい。」
"What thou seest when thou dost wake, Do it for thy true-love take."

ところで話をハーミアに戻すと、彼女は夜になって父の家から出ていった。
But to return to Hermia, who made her escape out of her father's house that night,

彼女がディミートリアスと結婚するのを断ったとがで死刑となるのを避けるためであった。
to avoid the death she was doomed to for refusing to marry Demetrius.

ハーミアは森に入り、愛するライサンダーが彼女を待っているのを見つけた。
When she entered the wood, she found her dear Lysander waiting for her,

ライサンダーはハーミアを自らのおばの家に案内するつもりだったけれども、２人が森の真ん中あたりまでいかないうちに、ハーミアが疲れてしまった。
to conduct her to his aunt's house; but before they had passed half through the wood Hermia was so much fatigued

そこでライサンダーは、自分のためにその生命を危険にさらし、彼を愛していることを身をもって証明してくれたハーミアの体を気遣い、柔らかいこけの堤の上で、朝まで休むようにすすめた。
that Lysander, who was very careful of this dear lady, who had proved her affection for him even by hazarding her life for his sake, persuaded her to rest till morning on a bank of soft moss,

自分はハーミアから少し離れた場所に横になった。
and, lying down himself on the ground at some little distance,

２人はすぐにぐっすり眠ってしまった。
they soon fell fast asleep.

さて、ここで２人はパックに見つかったのだ。
Here they were found by Puck,

パックは美青年が眠っているのを見たし、その着物はアテネ仕立て、おまけにかわいい女性が彼のそばで眠っているので、この２人がアテネの娘と彼女をきらっている恋人にちがいないと決め込んでしまった。
who, seeing a handsome young man asleep, and perceiving that his clothes were made in the Athenian fashion, and that a pretty lady was sleeping near him, concluded that this must be the Athenian maid and her disdainful lover whom Oberon had sent him to seek;

また、無理もないことであるが、２人のそばには誰もいないことから、彼が起きたときに最初に見るものがそばにいる女性になるに違いないと、パックは推量した。
and he naturally enough conjectured that, as they were alone together, she must be the first thing he would see when he awoke;

だからさっそく、彼の目に小さな紫花の汁を注ぐことにした。
so, without more ado, he proceeded to pour some of the juice of the little purple flower into his eyes.

しかし、ヘレナがその道をやってきたので、ハーミアのかわりにヘレナが、ライサンダーが目を開けたとき最初に見たものとなってしまった。
But it so fell out that Helena came that way, and, instead of Hermia, was the first object Lysander beheld when he opened his eyes;

とても不思議なことに、恋の魔力はとても強力なものだったので、ライサンダーがハーミアを愛する心はどこかへ行ってしまって、そしてヘレナを愛するようになってしまった。
and strange to relate, so powerful was the love-charm, all his love for Hermia vanished away and Lysander fell in love with Helena.

ライサンダーが目を覚まして最初に見たのがハーミアだったなら、パックの犯した間違いは大したことにはならなかっただろう。
Had he first seen Hermia when he awoke, the blunder Puck committed would have been of no consequence,

彼はあの誠実な娘をこれ以上ないくらいに愛していたのだから。
for he could not love that faithful lady too well;

しかし、かわいそうなライサンダーは、妖精《フェアリー》の「恋の魔法」によって、彼自身の本当の恋人ハーミアを忘れるように仕向けられてしまい、他の女の後を追って駆けだしていった。
but for poor Lysander to be forced by a fairy love-charm to forget his own true Hernia, and to run after another lady,

ハーミアは、１人真夜中の森に置き去りにされたまま眠っていたが、なんて情けないことになったものか。
and leave Hermia asleep quite alone in a wood at midnight, was a sad chance indeed.

そういうわけで、このような不幸が起こった。
Thus this misfortune happened.

前に話したとおり、ヘレナは、彼女から素っ気なく逃げていくディミートリアスの後ろを遅れまいと頑張っていた。
Helena, as has been before related, endeavored to keep pace with Demetrius when he ran away so rudely from her;

けれども、長時間あまりにも早いペースで走りつづけることができなかった。
but she could not continue this unequal race long, 

男というものは、常に女よりも優れた長距離走の走者なのだから、当然である。
men being always better runners in a long race than ladies.

ヘレナはすぐに、ディミートリアスを見失った。
Helena soon lost sight of Demetrius;

ヘレナは絶望してしまった。


今後の見通しも立たぬままにあたりをさまよい、やがてライサンダーが眠っている場所にたどり着いた。
and as she was wandering about, dejected and forlorn, she arrived at the place where Lysander was sleeping.

「ああ、
"Ah!" said she, 

ライサンダーが地面で倒れているわ。
"this is Lysander lying on the ground.

死んでいるのかしら、それとも眠っているだけかしら。」
Is he dead or asleep?"

ヘレナはつぶやいた。


そして、彼にそっと触って、こう言った。
Then, gently touching him, she said,

「あなた、生きているのなら、起きてちょうだい。」
"Good sir, if you are alive, 

ライサンダーは目を開けた。
Upon this Lysander opened his eyes,

そして（恋の魔法が働きはじめたので）すぐにヘレナに狂おしい愛情と賛美の言葉を言いはじめた。
and, the love-charm beginning to work, immediately addressed her in terms of extravagant love and admiration,

ヘレナがハーミアよりも美しい、まさに鳩が大がらすに勝っているようだ、とか、愛するあなたのためなら、火の中だってくぐってみせるなどと、恋人らしい言葉をたくさん言ってしまった。
telling her she as much excelled Hermia in beauty as a dove does a raven, and that be would run through fire for her sweet sake; and many more such lover-like speeches.

ヘレナは、ライサンダーが彼女の友達ハーミアの恋人で、すでに正式に結婚を約束した仲であることを知っていたので、そんなふうに話しかけられて、怒ってしまった。
Helena, knowing Lysander was her friend Hermia's lover, and that he was solemnly engaged to marry her, was in the utmost rage when she heard herself addressed in this manner;

（もっともなことであるが）彼女はライサンダーが自分をからかっていると思ったのだ。
for she thought (as well she might) that Lysander was making a jest of her.

「ああ、どうして私はみんなにあざけられたり軽蔑されるようになってしまったのでしょう。
"Oh!" said she, "why was I born to be mocked and scorned by every one?

ディミートリアスに優しくされず、親切な言葉ひとつかけられないというだけでたくさんなのに、まだつらい目にあうのかしら。
Is it not enough, is it not enough, young man, that I can never get a sweet look or a kind word from Demetrius;

それとも、あなたは私を馬鹿にしようと、こんなふうに言い寄るふりをする義理があるとでもいうの。
but you, sir, must pretend in this disdainful manner to court me?

怒りのままにこう言い残して、ヘレナは走っていってしまった。
Saying these words in great anger, she ran away;

ライサンダーは、まだ眠っているハーミアを忘れてしまって、ヘレナの後を追っていってしまった。
and Lysander followed her, quite forgetful of his own Hermia, who was still asleep.

ハーミアは、目が覚めたとき、自分がひとりぼっちだったのでびっくりした。
When Hermia awoke she was in a sad fright at finding herself alone.

ライサンダーがどうなったのかまるで分からず、彼を捜すにはどちらへいけばいいかもわからずに、森の中をさまよい歩いた。
She wandered about the wood, not knowing what was become of Lysander, or which way to go to seek for him.

一方、ディミートリアスはというと、ハーミアと、その恋を争っているライサンダーを見つけだすことができなかった。
In the mean time Demetrius, not being able to find Hermia and his rival Lysander,

さんざん捜しまわったあげく、疲れてしまってぐっすり眠っているところをオーベロンによって発見された。
and fatigued with his fruitless search, was observed by Oberon fast asleep.

オーベロンは、パックに問いただしたところから、パックは間違った人の目に愛の魔法をかけたことを知っていた。
Oberon had learned by some questions he had asked of Puck that he had applied the lovecharm to the wrong person's eyes;

今こそ、最初に目指していた人を見つけたので、眠っているディミートリアスのまぶたに愛の汁を垂らした。
and now, having found the person first intended, he touched the eyelids of the sleeping Demetrius with the love-juice,

すると、ディミートリアスはすぐに目を覚ました。
and he instantly awoke;

彼が最初に見たのはヘレナだったので、ライサンダーが以前にしたみたいに、ヘレナに愛の言葉をかけはじめた。
and the first thing he saw being Helena, he, as 
Lysander had done before, began to address love-speeches to her;

ちょうどそのとき（パックの不幸な間違いによって、今ではハーミアが恋人を追いかける番になってしまったから）ハーミアに追われたライサンダーが姿を見せた。
and just at that moment Lysander, followed by Hermia (for through Puck's unlucky mistake it was now become Hermia's turn to run after her lover), made his appearance;

ライサンダーとディミートリアスとは、２人いっしょにヘレナに愛を告白した。
and then Lysander and Demetrius, both speaking together, made love to Helena,

２人とも、同じ力を持つ魔法にかかっていたからである。
they being each one under the influence of the same potent charm.

ヘレナは驚き、ディミートリアスもライサンダーも、かって親友だったハーミアまでがみんなしめし合わせて彼女をからかっていると思った。
The astonished Helena thought that Demetrius, Lysander, and her once dear friend Hermia were all in a plot together to make a jest of her.

ハーミアもヘレナ同様たいそう驚いた。
Hermia was as much surprised as Helena;

彼女は、なぜ以前はともに自分を愛してくれた、ライサンダーとディミートリアスが、今ではヘレナの恋人となっているのか分からなかった。
she knew not why Lysander and Demetrius, who both before loved her, were now become the lovers of Helena, 

ハーミアにとっては、ことは冗談に見えなかった。
and to Hermia the matter seemed to be no jest.

以前はいつも仲良しだった２人の娘は、今や激論を始めていた。
The ladies, who before bad always been the dearest of friends, now fell to high words together.

「ひどいわ、ハーミア。」
"Unkind. Hermia,"

ヘレナは言った。
said Helena,

「あなた、ライサンダーに、私をからかい半分に褒めそやすようにけしかけたのね。
"it is you have set Lysander on to vex me with mock praises;

あなたのもう１人の恋人だったディミートリアスにも、以前は私を足げにせんばかりだったのに、私を絶世の、気高く美しい、この世のものならぬ女神だ、ニンフだと呼ぶように、あなたがいいつけたのでしょう？　
and your other lover, Demetrius, who used almost to spurn me with his foot, have you not bid him call me goddess, nymph, rare, precious, and celestial?

彼はそんなふうに私を呼ばないわ、私は彼にきらわれているのよ。
He would not speak thus to me, whom he hates,

あなたが言わなかったらこんな冗談言わないわ。
if you did not set him on to make a jest of me.

あなたはひどい人ね、男たちといっしょになって、みじめな親友を笑いものにするなんて。
Unkind Hermia, to join with men in scorning your poor friend.

学校時代にはあんなに友情を誓ったじゃない。忘れてしまったの、ハーミア？

私たち、よく２人いっしょにひとつのクッションに座って、歌を歌って、ひとつ花を２人で針で刺しながら、同じお手本を見ながら作ったじゃないの。
How often, Hermia, have we two, sitting on one cushion, both singing one song, with our needles working the same flower, both on the same sampler wrought;

赤の他人とも思えない、双子の桜ん坊みたいに育ったじゃない。
growing up together in fashion of a double cherry, scarcely seeming parted!

ハーミア、それはいじわるよ。
Hermia, it is not friendly in you,

男性たちといっしょになってあわれな友達をからかうなんて、慎みに欠けるんじゃない。」
it is not maidenly to join with men in scorning your poor friend."

「そんなに怒った言い方をするなんて驚きですわ。」
"I am amazed at your passionate words,"

ハーミアは言った。
said Hermia:

「私はあなたをからかいなどしませんわ。
"I scorn you not; 

あなたこそ私を馬鹿にしているようね。」
it seems you scorn me."

「ああ、そう。」
"Aye, do,"

ヘレナは言い返した。
returned Helena,

「いつまでもやるがいいわ。
"persevere,

深刻そうな顔をして、私が後ろを向いたらそれ見たかって顔をするんでしょう。
counterfeit serious looks, and make mouths at me when I turn my back;

なら、あなた達どうしで結構な軽口でも言ってなさい。
then wink at each other, and hold the sweet jest up.

あなたに同情心や気品やマナーが身についているなら、私をこんな目にあわせたりしないでしょうよ。」
If you had any pity, grace, or manners, you would not use me thus."　

ヘレナとハーミアがこんな口論をかわしているうちに、ディミートリアスとライサンダーはいなくなってしまった。
While Helena and Hermia were speaking these angry words to each other, Demetrius and Lysander left them,

ヘレナの愛をかけて、２人で決闘しようということになったのだ。
to fight together in the wood for the love of Helena.

２人は男たちがいなくなってしまったことに気づき、そこを立ち去って、再び恋人を捜しに森の中へあてもなく入っていった。
When they found the gentlemen had left them, they departed, and once more wandered weary in the wood in search of their lovers.

娘たちがいってしまうと、
As soon as they were gone

妖精《フェアリー》の王はパックに問いただした。２人はこれらの争いをみな聞いていたのだ。
the fairy king, who with little Puck had been listening to their quarrels, said to him,

「これはお前の手抜かりだよ、パック。
"This is your negligence, Puck;

それとも、わざとこうしたのかね。」
or did you do this wilfully?"

「とんでもありません、王様。」
"Believe me, king of shadows,"

パックは答えた。
answered Puck,

「何かの間違いです。
"it was a mistake.

あなたはアテネふうの着物でその人が分かるとおっしゃいませんでしたか。
Did not you tell me I should know the man by his Athenian garments?

けど、こうなっても悪いなとは私は思いませんね。
However, I am not sorry this has happened,

２人のけんかはとびきりの気晴らしですよ。」
for I think their jangling makes excellent sport."

「お前も聞いただろうが。」
"You heard,"

オーベロンは言った。
said Oberon,

「ディミートリアスとライサンダーは、決闘に好都合な場所を探しに行ってしまった。
"that Demetrius and Lysander are gone to seek a convenient place to fight in.

お前に命ずる。
I command you

夜を濃霧で包み、決闘をしにいった２人の恋人たちを道に迷わせ、互いに相手を見つけられないようにしなさい。
to overhang the night with a thick fog, and lead these quarrelsome lovers so astray in' the dark that they shall not be able to find each other.

２人の声をまねて、ののしって２人を怒らせて、お前の後をつけさせて、自分は敵が言った悪口を聞いていると思わせるんだ。
Counterfeit each of their voices to the other, and with bitter taunts provoke them to follow you, while they think it is their rival's tongue they hear.

２人がへとへとになって動けなくなるまで続けるんだ。
See you do this, till they are so weary they can go no farther;

それで、彼らが眠ったら、この、別の花の汁をライサンダーの目に垂らすのだ。
and when you find they are asleep, drop the juice of this other flower into Lysander's eyes,

目が覚めたら、ヘレナへの新しい愛情はさめて、ハーミアに対する以前の愛情を思い出すだろう。
and when he awakes he will forget his new love for Helena, and return to his old passion for Hermia;

and they will think all that has passed a vexatious dream.

and I will go and see what sweet love my Titania has found."

ティターニアはまだ眠っていた。
Titania was still sleeping,

オーベロンは、彼女のそばに、森の中で道に迷って、同じように眠ってしまったいなか者がいるのを見て、
and Oberon, seeing a clown near her who had lost his way in the wood and was likewise asleep,

「こいつをティターニアの恋人にしてやろう。」と言った。
"This fellow," said he, "shall be my Titania's true love";

そして、ろばの頭をいなか者の頭にのせた。
and clapping an ass's head over the clown's,

その頭はもともといなか者の肩から生えてきたかのようにぴったりくっついているように見えた。
it seemed to fit him as well as if it had grown upon his own shoulders.

オーベロンは、ろばの頭をそっとのせたのだが、それで彼は目を覚まし、起きあがった。
Though Oberon fixed the ass's head on very gently, it awakened him, and, rising up,

そして、オーベロンがしたことに気づかないままに、女王が眠っている木陰の方に歩いていった。
unconscious of what Oberon had done to him, he went toward the bower where the fairy queen slept.

「あら！　なんという天使がいるのでしょう。」
"Ah I what angel is that I see?"

ティターニアは目を開くと言った。
said Titania, opening her eyes,

あの紫花の汁が効きはじめていたのだ。
and the juice of the little purple flower beginning to take effect.

「あなたはその美しさとともに、賢さをあわせもっているのかしら。」
"Are you as wise as you are beautiful?"

「いや奥様。」
"Why, mistress,"

と愚かないなか者はいった。
said the foolish clown,

「この森を抜けだす道が見つけられれば、それで十分です。」
"if I have wit enough to find the way out of this wood, I have enough to serve my turn."

「森を抜けだすなんて考えないでくださいな。」
"Out of the wood do not desire to go,"

恋に落ちた女王は言った。
said the enamoured queen.

「私はふつうの妖精《フェアリー》ではないのよ。
"I am a spirit of no common rate.

私、あなたが好きなの。
I love you.

私といっしょにいらっしゃい。
Go with me,

あなたのお世話をする妖精《フェアリー》をさしあげますわ。」
and I will give you fairies to attend upon you."

それから女王は４人の妖精《フェアリー》を呼んだ。
She then called four of her fairies.

その名は豆の花、くもの巣、蛾、からし種と言った。
Their names were Peas-blossom, Cobweb, Moth, and Mustard-seed.

「お世話をしなさい。」
"Attend,"

女王は言った。
said the queen,

「この立派な紳士の。
"upon this sweet gentleman.

この方のお歩きになるところでとんだり、見えるところで踊ってさしあげなさい。
Hop in his walks and gambol in his sight;

ぶどうやあんずを食べていただいたり、みつばちからみつ袋をとってきてさしあげなさい。
feed him with grapes and apricots, and steal for him the honey-bags from the bees.

あなた、私といっしょにお座りなさい。」
Come, sit with me,"

最後の言葉はいなか者に向けて、女王は言った。
said she to the clown.

さらに女王は、


「あなたのかわいい毛むくじゃらのほっぺに触らせて、私のかわいいろばさん。
"and let me play with your amiable hairy cheeks, my beautiful ass!

あなたのきれいな大きい耳にキスさせてね。
and kiss your fair large ears,

私のやさしい大事な方。」
my gentle joy."

と言った。


「豆の花はどこにいるかね。」
"Where is Peas-blossom?"

ろばの頭をつけたいなか者が言った。
said the ass-headed clown,

彼は女王が甘えてくるのは気にしておらず、むしろ新しい侍女がいるのを得意がっていた。
not much regarding the fairy queen's courtship, but very proud of his new attendants.

「ここにおります。」
"Here, sir,"

小さな豆の花が言った。
said little Peas-blossom.

「私の頭をかいておくれ。」
"Scratch my head,"

いなか者は言った。
said the clown.

「くもの巣はどこかね。」
"Where is Cobweb?"

「ここにおります。」
"Here, sir,"

くもの巣は言った。
said Cobweb.

「くもの巣君。」
"Good Mr. Cobweb,"

愚かないなか者は言った。
said the foolish clown,

「向こうのあざみのてっぺんにいる、赤いまるはなばちを殺しておくれ。
"kill me the red humblebee on the top of that thistle yonder;

それから、くもの巣君、私にみつ袋を持ってきておくれ。
and, good Mr. Cobweb, bring me the honey-bag.

持ってくるときに、あまり気短にしないでくれよ、くもの巣君。
Do not fret yourself too much in the action, Mr. Cobweb,

みつ袋が破れないように気をつけてくれよ。
and take care the honey-bag break not;

君がみつ袋をひっかぶったら気の毒だからね。
I should be sorry to have you overflown with a honey-bag.

からし種はどこにいるかね。」
Where is Mustard-seed?"

「ここにおります。」
"Here, sir, "

からし種は答えた。
said Mustard-seed.

「ご用はなんでしょうか。」
"What is your will?"

「なんでもないんだ。」
"Nothing,"

いなか者は答えた。
said the clown,

「からし種君、豆の花君を手伝って、頭をかいておくれ。
"good Mr. Mustard-seed, but to help Mr. Peas-blossom to scratch;

どうも床屋へ行かなきゃならんな、そうだろ、からし種君、どうも、私の顔のあたりがとても毛むくじゃらになっているようだからな。」
I must go to a barber's, Mr. Mustard-seed, for methinks I am marvelous hairy about the face."

「あなた。」
"My sweet love,"

女王が言った。
said the queen,

「あなたは何をお食べになるの。
"what will you have to eat?

私は冒険好きな妖精《フェアリー》を従えています。
I have a venturous fairy

その子にりすの貯えを探させて、あなたに新しい木の実をさしあげるつもりですけど。」
shall seek the squirrel's hoard, and fetch you some new nuts."　

「それより乾豆一握りの方がいいね。
"I had rather have a handful of dried peas,"

いなか者が言った。
said the clown,

ろばの頭がついたので、ろばの食欲を持っていたのだ。
who with his ass's head had got an ass's appetite.

「だがお願いだ。
"But, I pray,

あなたの部下に私の邪魔をさせないようにしてください。
let none of your people disturb me,

私は眠たいんだ。」
for I have a mind to sleep."

「では、おやすみなさい。」
"Sleep, then,"

女王は言った。
said the queen,

「私が抱いてさしあげましょう。
"and I will wind you in my arms.

あなたを愛してるわ。
Oh, how I love you!

とっても大好き。」
how I dote upon you!"

妖精《フェアリー》の王は、いなか者が女王の腕の中で眠っているのを見た。
When the fairy king saw the clown sleeping in the arms of his queen, he advanced within her sight,

彼女の前にでてきて、彼女がろばに対してふんだんに愛情を注いだことをとがめた。
and reproached her with having lavished her favors upon an ass.

これを彼女は否定できなかった。
This she could not deny,

相手の男は、彼女に作ってもらった花飾りで頭を飾っており、また、腕の中で眠っているところだったから。
as the clown was then sleeping within her arms, with his ass's head crowned by her with flowers.

オーベロンはしばらくティターニアをいじめた後で、またとりかえ子を要求した。
When Oberon had teased her for some time, he again demanded the changeling boy;

彼女は、新しいお気に入りといっしょにいるところを主人に見られてしまい、恥じ入っていたから、オーベロンの要求を断れなかった。
which she, ashamed of being discovered by her lord with her new favorite, did not dare to refuse him.

オーベロンは、ついに長らく小姓に欲しいと思っていたとりかえ子を得た。
Oberon, having thus obtained the little boy he had so long wished for to be his page,

そうすると、オーベロンの愉快な計略によって不名誉な立場にたってしまったティターニアのことがかわいそうに思えてきた。
took pity on the disgraceful situation into which, by his merry contrivance, he had brought his Titania, 

そこで、別の花の汁を彼女の目に垂らしてやった。
and threw some of the juice of the other flower into her eyes;

すると、妖精《フェアリー》の女王はたちまち正気に返った。
and the fairy queen immediately recovered her senses,

ついさっきまでののぼせようを不思議がり、その相手だった奇妙な怪物を、もう見るのもいやだというのだった。
and wondered at her late dotage, saying how she now loathed the sight of the strange monster.

同じように、オーベロンはろばの頭をいなか者からとってしまって、もう元の頭を肩の上にのせているそのいなか者が、昼寝をし終えるまで放っておいた。
Oberon likewise took the ass's head from off the clown, and left him to finish his nap with his own fool's head upon his shoulders.

オーベロンと、彼の妻ティターニアは、今や完全に仲直りしていた。
Oberon and his Titania being now perfectly reconciled,

オーベロンは、ティターニアに恋人たちの物語と深夜のけんかのことを話した。
he related to her the history of the lovers and their midnight quarrels,

彼女は、彼といっしょに話の結末を見に行くことに賛同した。
and she agreed to go with him and see the end of their adventures.

妖精《フェアリー》の王と女王の２人は、恋人たちと、その美しい娘たちが、ごく近い距離をおいて、草地の上に眠っているのを見つけた。
The fairy king and queen found the lovers and their fair ladies, at no great distance from one another, sleeping on a grass-plot;

パックが、自分の間違いの埋め合わせをしようと、恋人たち全員を同じ場所に、互いにそれと知れぬまま集めようと全力を尽くしたのだった。
for Puck, to make amends for his former mistake, had contrived with the utmost diligence to bring them all to the same spot, unknown to one another;

すでにライサンダーの目からは、王が与えた解毒剤を使って、魔力を取り除いてあった。
and he bad carefully removed the charm from off the eyes of Lysander with the antidote the fairy king gave to him.

ハーミアが最初に目を覚ました。
Hermia first awoke,

彼女は、見失ってしまったはずのライサンダーがそばにいるのを見て、彼が見せた奇妙な心変わりを不審がっていた。
and, finding her lost Lysander asleep so near her, was looking at him and wondering at his strange inconstancy.

まもなくライサンダーが目を開けた。
Lysander presently opening his eyes,

愛するハーミアを見ているうちに、妖精《フェアリー》の魔力で曇っていた正気が戻ってきて、再びハーミアを愛するようになった。
and seeing his dear Hermia, recovered his reason which the fairy charm had before clouded, and with his reason his love for Hermia;

２人はその夜起こった事件について語り始めた。
and they began to talk over the adventures of the night,

果たして事件が本当に起こったのか、それとも同じ夢を見ていただけなのか、疑っていた。
doubting if these things had really happened, or if they bad both been dreaming the same bewildering dream.

ヘレナとディミートリアスは、そのとき、もう起きていた。
Helena and Demetrius were by this time awake;

快い眠りによって、ヘレナの中では腹だたしい気分はすっかりおさまっていた。
and a sweet sleep having quieted Helena's disturbed and angry spirits,

そして、ディミートリアスが聞かせてくれる愛の告白に喜んで耳を傾けていた。
she listened with delight to the professions of love which Demetrius still made to her,

嬉しくも驚いたことに、ヘレナはその告白が誠実なものだと思い始めていたのだった。
and which, to her surprise as well as pleasure, she began to perceive were sincere.

不思議な夜を体験した美しい娘たちは、今ではもう競争相手ではなく、再び親友同士となった。
These fair night-wandering ladies, now no longer rivals, became once more true friends;

これまでのひどい言葉はみな許されて、今やるべき最前のことは何だろうと一同で話しあった。
all the unkind words which had passed were forgiven, and they calmly consulted together what was best to be done in their present situation.

やがて決まったことは、ディミートリアスはハーミアに対する要求を放棄したのだから、ハーミアの父を説得して、ハーミアに下された死刑宣告を取り消させる、ということだった。
It was soon agreed that, as Demetrius bad given up his pretensions to Hermia, he should endeavor to prevail upon her father to revoke the cruel sentence of death which had been passed against her.

ディミートリアスが、この親切な目的のためにアテネに帰る準備を始めた。
Demetrius was preparing to return to Athens for this friendly purpose,

そのとき、驚くべきことが起こった。
when they were surprised

ハーミアの父イージアスが現れたのだ。
with the sight of Egeus, Hermia's father,

彼は逃げだした娘を追って森にやってきたのだ。
who came to the wood in pursuit of his runaway daughter.

イージアスは、ディミートリアスがもう娘と結婚する気がなくなったことを知って、これ以上ライサンダーと娘との結婚を反対しないことにして、今から４日後に娘とライサンダーが結婚することを許可した。
When Egeus understood that Demetrius would not now marry his daughter, he no longer opposed her marriage with Lysander,  but gave his consent that they should be wedded on the fourth day from that time,

その日はちょうど、ハーミアが命を失うことになっていた日だった。
being the same day on which Hermia had been condemned to lose her life;

また、同じ日にヘレナは、今や誠実な彼女の愛人となったディミートリアスと結婚することに、喜んで同意した。
and on that same day Helena joyfully agreed to marry her beloved and now faithful Demetrius.

妖精《フェアリー》の王と女王は、この和解の見えざる目撃者となった。
The fairy king and queen, who were invisible spectators of this reconciliation,

恋人たちの物語が、オーベロンの親切な計らいによって、めでたい結末に終わったのを見て、大いに喜んだ。
and now saw the happy ending of the lovers' history, brought about through the good offices of Oberon, received so much pleasure

この親切な妖精《フェアリー》たちは、近づく婚礼を、妖精《フェアリー》国全土を挙げての宴楽でもって祝うことに決めた。
that these kind spirits resolved to celebrate the approaching nuptials with sports and revels throughout their fairy kingdom.

ところで、もし妖精《フェアリー》たちが悪ふざけをしたこの物語に対して、信じられない奇談と判断して腹を立てる人がいるなら、その人たちには以下のように考えてもらえばそれでいい。
And now, if any are offended with this story of fairies and their pranks, as judging it incredible and strange, they have only to think

その人たちは夢を見ていたんだろうし、この事件は夢の中で見た幻に過ぎないのだと。
that they have been asleep and dreaming, and that all these adventures were visions which they saw in their sleep.

そして、読者の中に、この美しく無邪気な真夏の夜の夢に腹を立てるような、わけの分からぬ人などいないことを私は望んでいるのだ。
And I hope none of my readers will be so unreasonable as to be offended with a pretty, harmless Midsummer Night's Dream.
