Kusamakura translated by Kazutomo Takahashi (1927)

　Digireads.com という出版社が発行している 草枕の英訳本を入手しました。2013年発行の版です。

　訳者は、高橋一知 (Kazutomo Takahashi) で、訳者の Preface の日付は1927年6月21日です。

　国立国会図書館サーチによると、これは、The Japan Times 社が、1927年に、Masterpieces of The Contemporary Japanese Fiction シリーズの一冊として刊行したようです。

　漱石は、1916年に亡くなりましたので、没後10年ほどでの出版で、多分、最初の翻訳だと思います。

　どんな文体かを示すために、冒頭部分を少し引用します。青字の部分です。

●山路(やまみち)を登りながら、こう考えた。  山道を登りながら、私は、こう考えた。
Climing the mountain, I was caught into a train of thought.

●智に働けば角(かど)が立つ。情に棹させば流される。
知恵で行動すると角が立つ。感情に乗じると流される。
Work with your brains, and you are liable to be harsh. Punt in the stream of sentiment, and you may be carried away.

意地を通せば窮屈だ。とかくに人の世は住みにくい。
意地を通すと窮屈だ。とにかく人の世は住みにくい。
Pride stiffens you to discomfort.  Heigh-ho, this, is a disagreeable world to live in.

●住みにくさが高こうじると、安い所へ引き越したくなる。
住みにくさが高まると、住み安い処へ引っ越したくなる。
When the disagreeableness deepens, you wish to move to a world where life is less uneasy. 

どこへ越しても住みにくいと悟った時、詩が生れて、画が出来る。
どこへ越しても住みにくいと悟った時、詩が生まれ、絵ができる。
It is precisely when you awake to the truth, that move where you will, it will be hard to live, that poetry is born and art creates.

●人の世を作ったものは神でもなければ鬼でもない。やはり向う三軒両隣にちらちらするただの人である。
人の世を作った者は、神でもなく、鬼でもなく、向こう三軒両隣にちらちらする普通の人である。
This human world of ours is the making neither of God nor of the Devil; but of common mortals; your beighbours on your right; your neighbors on your left, and your neighbors across the street..

ただの人が作った人の世が住みにくいからとて、越す国はあるまい。
普通の人が作った人の世が住みにくいからと言って、引っ越す国はないだろう。
Hate you may this world of common mortals, but where else can you go?

あれば人でなしの国へ行くばかりだ。人でなしの国は人の世よりもなお住みにくかろう。
あるとしても人でなしの国に行くことになるだけだ。人でなしの国は人の世よりも、もっと住みにくいだろう。
If anywhere else , it must be an inhuman world, but you will find an inhuman world a worse place to live in than this of humanity.

●越す事のならぬ世が住みにくければ、住みにくい所をどれほどか、寛容(くつろげ)て、束の間の命を、束の間でも住みよくせねばならぬ。
引っ越すことができないこの世が住みにくければ、住みにくい所を、いか程か、くつろぐことができ、短い命を、短い間でも、住みよくしなければならない。
Things being disagreeable in the world you cannot depart from, but you must resign yourself to making the best of disagreeableness, by rubbing off its sharp corners and relaxing its pinches, to what degree you may, to pass pleasantly, even for a brief while, this life of so short a span.

ここに詩人という天職が出来て、ここに画家という使命が降(くだ)る。
ここに詩人という天職ができ、ここに画家という使命が降りてくる。
Here arises the heaven-ordained mission of the poet and the painter,

あらゆる芸術の士は人の世を長閑(のどか)にし、人の心を豊かにするが故に尊とい。
あらゆる芸術家は、人の世をのどかにし、人の心を豊かにするので、尊いのだ。
and blessed are they, who with their art, make life in this world more rich and more cheerful.
